Sierra de Mijas after the Fire
Today I decided to do a reconnaissance of one of my favourite walks to see how bad the fire has affected the Alhaurin side of the mountain.
This is my 400th hike/walk. It is probably the saddest day of my walking life; because of the damage this fire has caused my favourite mountain.
The fire started on July the 15th around midday. The authorities at the moment are saying the evidence is pointing to arson, as there were 3 fires in different locations, all started around the same time.
The route I took was my modified version of the Sendero El Conde.
From the off road parking the initial path was hard to follow because there were too many pine needles on the ground, but after 150m it becomes visible.
The first indication of the fire starts just less than 1km into the walk. The air is acrid in places but the lower section of the route is not too bad.
Carry on crossing over the arroyo and get to the intersection with the large pine tree and metal post, then go straight ahead, and take the small path on your right. This is a good uphill hike for about 8 minutes until you pick up the Camino del Conde.
The first sign along here that the fire has done some serious damage is around 3.3km into the walk.
In places it’s like walking in a black forest. In other sections with the grey ash it’s like a scene from a winter wonderland. In other sections that were slightly scorched it’s like El Bosque de Cobre (the copper forest).
The shade used to be about 95%, now it’s about 70%.
The damage caused is about 40% of the sendero.
Most of the ground vegetation was burnt away, plus the leaves and pine cones of the trees. A lot of trees and tree trunks still remain and I honestly think they will recover.
A couple of rains to wash away the ash, and hopefully this will help the trees to pick up again.
Some areas higher up where the fire was more intense will need to be repopulated.
The Sierra de Mijas survived the massive fire of 2001 and will also survive this one. At the moment it looks worse than it is, but given time it will recover.
Please note at the beginning there is an elevation glitch on the Wikiloc, just ignore.

So sad to see the destruction of one of our favourite walks for our club. Many thanks for the recce and we’re sure in time it will recover again.
