Sierra Nevada: Bérchules - Cerro Gordo en recorrido circular (with English version)

Esta ruta forma parte de un recorrido circular de tres días que transcurre entre Trevélez y Bérchules.

En este segundo día de travesía, salimos de Bérchules desde la fuente de las Carmelas, que está al principio del pueblo. Recorriendo su calle principal, pasamos por la iglesia de San Juan Bautista, del s. XVI, con un bonito artesonado mudéjar y hacemos un alto en la plaza de Abastos, para desayunar en el bar Vaquero, aprovechando que abre bien temprano. Con la euforia que proporciona la cafeína, seguimos callejeando por este bonito pueblo alpujarreño y salimos del mismo por la calle García. Unos paneles nos informan de varias de las posibles rutas que se pueden realizar por la zona. Empezamos recorriendo el PR-A 28, pero pronto lo dejamos para tomar la senda que va paralela a la acequia nueva y que paralela al río Grande, nos llevará hasta el paraje conocido como la Junta de los Ríos, por ser el punto donde el río Chico afluye al río Grande. El recorrido es de un gran encanto, sobre todo ahora, en otoño, pues son muchos los árboles de hoja caduca que encontramos a nuestro paso, y el espectáculo de color es impresionante. El escenario acompaña pues el río Grande se encajona formando dos impresionantes tajos: el del Campanario y el del Reyecillo. No obstante, la senda es estrecha y, en ocasiones, con caída, lo cual la hace poco aconsejable a quien padezca vértigo. En tal caso, mejor seguir el sendero señalizado que pasa por arriba.
En la Junta de los Ríos, aún se conservan las estructuras de lo que se conoce como la “fábrica de los moros”, con un llamativo arco de herradura. Se cuenta que en esta zona y sus cuevas aledañas, se refugió Aben Aboo, el último rey morisco, durante la sublevación de los moriscos, en el s. XVI, y dicen las crónicas que aquí perdieron la vida decenas de musulmanes.
La vereda se hace ahora más ancha y marcada mientras sube. Toma el nombre de Camino del Puerto, pues se dirige hasta el Collado del Puerto para transponer la divisoria de la Sierra y alcanzar la comarca del Zenete. Cuando empieza a remontar la loma para dirigirse hacia el collado, la abandonamos para ir buscando la cabecera del río Grande. En esta zona, la traza, a veces, es difícil de seguir y el camino se encuentra interrumpido por angarillas que habremos de abrir y dejar cerradas. Alcanzamos, finalmente, el curso del río en una bucólica arboleda. Estamos en los tramos más elevados del río Grande que es donde tiene su origen el río Guadalfeo que desemboca entre Salobreña y Motril.
Toca, ahora, remontar por la ladera opuesta. La traza, aquí, no está muy marcada y hay que fijarse mucho para advertir los hitos de piedra que la señalizan. Llegamos a un cortijo en ruinas junto a una era. A partir de aquí, la traza prácticamente desaparece, con lo que, a veces, se tiene la sensación de caminar campo a través. Aunque es muy vertical, el trayecto es breve hasta que arribamos al carril que atraviesa toda esta parte de la sierra en altura. Este tramo del carril forma parte del GR-240 (Sulayr) hasta un paraje cercano conocido como “el Lastonar”. Seguimos el carril en dirección sur. Cuando estamos en las inmediaciones de Cerro Gordo, lo abandonamos para coronar el pico campo a través. Estamos a 2086 m.s.n.m.
Tras un merecido descanso que aprovechamos para supervitaminarnos y mineralizarnos (además de contemplar las esplendorosas vistas), iniciamos el descenso. A pocos metros, se encuentra la caseta de vigilancia contra incendios que se eleva sobre la copa del pinar y que nos ofrece vistas de Bérchules a ojo de halcón. Combinando trayectos campo a través y por carril, alcanzamos la elevación del Tejár. A partir de aquí, descendemos por pronunciados cortafuegos y algún tramo sin sendero hasta llegar al carril que conecta con el PR-A 28, que viene de los tajos del Campanario. Más abajo, llegamos a la ermita de Cortés, junto al Cortijo de Montero. Seguimos descendiendo y conectamos con el tramo del GR-7 que viene desde la población de Mecina-Bombarón. El sendero pasa por una era y unos escarpes y baja vertiginosamente hasta el cauce del río Grande por una típica escaleruela alpujarreña. Cruzamos el puente sobre el río e iniciamos la subida hasta Bérchules, cuyas primeras casas ya se recortan en el cielo. Por su parte más baja, volvemos al punto de inicio.

On this second day of the journey, we leave Bérchules from the City Hall, which is at the beginning of the town. Walking along its main street, we pass by the church of San Juan Bautista, from the s. XVI, with a beautiful Mudejar coffered ceiling and we make a stop at the Plaza de Abastos, to have breakfast at the Vaquero bar, taking advantage of the fact that it opens very early. With the euphoria provided by caffeine, we continue wandering through this beautiful town of Alpujar and we leave it on García Street. Some panels inform us of several of the possible routes that can be taken through the area. We start by touring the PR-A 28, but soon we leave it to take the path that goes parallel to the new irrigation ditch and that parallel to the Rio Grande, will take us to the place known as the Junta de los Ríos, because it is the point where the Chico River flows into the Rio Grande. The tour is of great charm, especially now, in autumn, because there are many deciduous trees that we find in our path, and the color spectacle is impressive. The stage accompanies as the Rio Grande is encased forming two impressive pits: that of the Campanario and that of the Reyecillo. However, the path is narrow and, sometimes, with a fall, which makes it inadvisable for those who suffer from vertigo. In such a case, it is better to follow the signposted path that passes above.

In the Junta de los Ríos, the structures of what is known as the "factory of the Moors" are still preserved, with a striking horseshoe arch. It is said that in this area and its surrounding caves, Aben Aboo, the last Moorish king, took refuge during the uprising of the Moors, in the s. XVI, and the chronicles say that dozens of Muslims lost their lives here.

The sidewalk now becomes wider and more marked as it goes up. It takes the name of Camino del Puerto, since it goes to the Collado del Puerto to cross the divide of the Sierra and reach the Zenete region. When he begins to climb the hill to go towards the hill, we leave it to look for the head of the Rio Grande. In this area, the route is sometimes difficult to follow and the road is interrupted by angarillas that we will have to open and leave closed. We finally reached the course of the river in a bucolic grove. We are in the highest sections of the Grande River, which is where the Guadalfeo River that flows between Salobreña and Motril has its origin.

Now it's time to go up the opposite slope. The trace, here, is not very marked and you have to pay close attention to notice the stone milestones that mark it. We arrived at a ruined farmhouse next to an era. From here, the trace practically disappears, so, sometimes, you have the feeling of walking cross-country. Although it is very vertical, the journey is short until we reach the lane that crosses this entire part of the mountain in height. This section of the lane is part of the GR-240 (Sulayr) to a nearby place known as "el Lastonar". We follow the lane in a southbound direction. When we are in the vicinity of Cerro Gordo, we leave it to crown the cross-country peak. We are at 2086 m.s.l.

After a well-deserved rest that we took advantage of to supervitaminize and mineralize ourselves (in addition to contemplating the splendid views), we began the descent. A few meters away, there is the fire surveillance booth that rises above the crown of the pine forest and offers us views of Bérchules with a falcon's eye. Combining cross-country and lane routes, we reached the elevation of the Tejár. From here, we descend through pronounced firewalls and some stretch without a path until we reach the lane that connects with the PR-A 28, which comes from the pits of the Bell Tower. Further down, we arrive at the hermitage of Cortés, next to the Cortijo de Montero. We continue descending and connect with the section of the GR-7 that comes from the town of Mecina-Bombarón. The trail passes through an era and some escarpments and descends dizzyingly to the bed of the Rio Grande through a typical escaleruela alpujarreña. We crossed the bridge over the river and started the ascent to Bérchules, whose first houses are already cut in the sky. For its lower part, we return to the starting point.
