Itinerary description

Sierra Nevada: Bérchules-Peñón del Muerto I (almost) with English version
This track shows a route in the Sierra Nevada (Granada) from the Alpujarre town of Bérchules to the vicinity of the Peñón del Muerto I. I describe the route as difficult due to its extension, the accumulated slope and transiting through high mountain terrain. The route runs in almost all its integrity along roads and paths, except in its final part of ascent to the peak, which is cross-country.
We start from the beautiful Alpujarre town of Bérchules, from its upper part. Wandering, we find an indicative sign that describes the first part of the route, which coincides with the local path "Acequias de los Bérchules". On the rise, we soon left the town and began to enjoy views of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and the encased Rio Grande, with the impressive valleys of the Campanario and the Reyecillo.
After the section of the local trail, we continue along a wide road that crosses agri-livestock farms and that ends on the Minas track, which is where the Sulayr trail (GR-240) runs. We barely walk a few meters to deviate along a lane that goes to the left and that goes uphill through a dense and beautiful pine forest.
At the exit of the pine forest, the road is transformed into a well-marked path. The typical vegetation of the high mountain already appears. The path connects in the cordal with another that comes from Piedra Ventana and the Peña de los Papos and that we will continue in an upward direction.
We arrive at a hill overlooking the other slope and the panorama is spectacular: the grandeur of the three thousand Sierra Nevada, completely covered with snow, with the Mulhacén and the Alcazaba, in the foreground, opens to our eyes. The landscape is a fairy tale. On this side we are walking on, however, there are barely a few snows so I am afraid that we will not use the crampons that we have loaded from below.
On the hill, the path continues on the other side for a long stretch, and passes, again, to the other side, looking downhill for a lane that comes from the Las Minas track. We follow the lane for a stretch until we are in front of the cliffs of the Peñón del Muerto I. We head to the same cross-country, guided, rather, by intuition and looking for the best trace. In the final part, we are directly faced with the verticality of the cliffs by the less exposed steps. We were very close to crowning the Rock of the Dead I, but without being able to tread it due to lack of time.
We made the return on the same way outward.
