Sierra Nevada: refugio de San Francisco y Piedra Resbaladiza desde el collado del Diablo (with English version)

Esta es una ruta fácil, corta y agradable para activar músculos y aclimatarse a la altitud, previa a una actividad más exigente por la zona al día siguiente.

Se deja el vehículo en el arcén de la carretera que sube hasta la Hoya de la Mora, a la altura del collado del Diablo. Justo al otro lado de la carretera, arranca un carril cerrado al tráfico rodado por una cadena que en poco más de dos kilómetros en ligera bajada termina en una pintoresca planicie conocida como los Campos de Otero en el que se sitúa el llamativo refugio de San Francisco. Este refugio, construido en el lejano 1915 por el Club Deportivo Sociedad Sierra Nevada-una de los clubes de montaña más antiguos de España-, fue el primero que se construyó en la cordillera. Destruido durante la contienda fratricida en 1938 (no olvidemos que en Sierra Nevada estuvo la línea del frente entre el bando republicano y el del alzamiento), en los 90 se vuelve a reacondicionar, si bien solo su mitad norte como modesto refugio de montaña, pues la sur, que se componía de una cúpula gemela también de color rojo estaba en estado de ruina. Tras caer en estado de abandono a principios de era, se reabre nuevamente en 2022 como refugio guardado con servicio de alojamiento, comida y cantina. Cuenta, también, con una parte habilitada como refugio-vivac.
A partir del refugio, continuamos por sendero siguiendo la loma. El itinerario nos ofrece vistas de la norte de la Alcazaba y de los tresmiles orientales poco conocidas. Siguiendo la traza correcta, descendemos hasta el barranco de San Juan, con sus bonitas pequeñas pozas de aguas cristalinas. Este punto es una confluencia de caminos: desde los que vienen desde abajo, remontando todo el barranco de San Juan desde el mismo Genil, hasta los que suben por el barranco o se encaraman a los riscos del
Atalayón Chico, con vistas al
Guarnón. Remontándolo unas decenas de metros por una pequeña traza marcada con hitos de piedra, se llega a las chorreras de Piedra Resbaladiza. Su cascada zigzagueante no te dejará indiferente en cualquier época que la visites pero muy especialmente durante el deshielo. La vuelta la hicimos por el mismo camino.

This is an easy, short and pleasant route to activate muscles and acclimatize to the altitude, prior to a more demanding activity in the area the next day.

The vehicle is left on the shoulder of the road that goes up to the Hoya de la Mora, at the height of the Coldo del Diablo. Just on the other side of the road, a lane starts closed to road traffic by a chain that in just over two kilometers in a slight descent ends in a picturesque plain known as the Campos de Otero in which the striking San Francisco refuge is located. This shelter, built in 1915 by the Club Deportivo Sociedad Sierra Nevada - one of the oldest mountain clubs in Spain - was the first to be built in the mountain range. Destroyed during the fratricidal conflict in 1938 (don't forget that in Sierra Nevada there was the front line between the Republican side and that of the uprising), in the 90s it is refurbished, although only its northern half as a modest mountain refuge, since the south, which was composed of a twin dome also red, was in a state of ruin. After falling into a state of neglect at the beginning of the era, it reopens again in 2022 as a guarded shelter with accommodation service, food and canteen. It also has a part enabled as a refuge-vivac.

From the shelter, we continue along the path following the hill. The itinerary offers us views of the north of the Alcazaba and the little-known eastern three-thousanders. Following the correct route, we descend to the ravine of San Juan, with its beautiful small pools of crystal clear waters. Atalayón Chico, overlooking the

Guarnón. Going up a few tens of meters by a small trace marked with stone landmarks, you reach the jets of Piedra Resbaladiza. Its zigzagging waterfall will not leave you indifferent at any time you visit it, but especially during the thaw. We made the return along the same path.
