Sierra Prieta from Alozaina on an almost circular route (with English version)
There are numerous ways to access the emblematic summit of Sierra Prieta. On this occasion, we are going to do it from the town of Alozaina, for its steeper and more vertical face, on a route that is practically circular.
I describe the route as difficult for hikers because it has some exposed steps that require climbing, as well as the accumulated slope.
At the beginning of the route, on the outskirts of Alozaina, we have a plain where we can park the vehicle. We find, there, an explanatory poster of the PR-A 272, which we are going to follow, in part, to the place of Siete Fuentes.
The first kilometers are made on the road of the Loma de los Higuerales, a concrete lane with a high slope, one of those that hikers hate so much because they are designed on a vehicle scale and not on a human scale. Every time we look back, we see the beautiful picture of Alozaina below, cut out in the valley. After the concrete, we take, on the left, an earthy lane that crosses the Zaralejo plain, composed of farmland, already with our eyes on the imposing limestone rock that represents Sierra Prieta. Later, we leave the PR that we have been following and continue to the left on agricultural land. The lane blurs, becoming a trace that penetrates the pine forest in strong rise, until it reaches the track that crosses the entire mountain range longitudinally and that starts from Puerto Martínez. We follow the track briefly because we soon recovered the PR we were bringing, taking a path that goes out on the right. The trail follows the ravine of Uncle Felipe reaching the port of Romeral (or Pino Alto). It is a key point, since we can see, on the other side of the valley, Yunquera. Above, we can clearly see Sierra Cabrilla, on the left, and Sierra Prieta, on the right.
We continue climbing to a pillar known as Siete Fuentes. It is the point where abandoned the marked path that goes to Sierra Cabrilla to take another, less conspicuous one that goes towards the port of Mojón de los Tres Términos, which offers us views of the north face of the mountain range, with the Burgo below, in the valley. From this point on, we will face the ascent to the Sierra Prieta itself. The wall is shown to us of a great verticality and offers us doubts about whether it will be allowed to go up, but, following the milestones and with patience, we will be able to ascend through it without too much difficulty. It is the most complicated part of the entire tour. Some steps are a little exposed and will force us to use our hands. It is not recommended, therefore, for hikers who have vertigo or who do not move with ease on such vertical ascents.
We arrived at the summit of Sierra Prieta, at 1518 m.s.a.l., where we are received by a geodesic vertex that a few years ago changed its positioning and a chasm that is accessed by a very laminated cat.
After enjoying the views and the well-deserved rest, we start the descent, which we are going to make on the PR-A 273 that starts from the vicinity of Fuente Techá. The first meters are not marked (at least, I didn't find them), although, they are done without difficulty. Little by little, traces and milestones will appear, which we will follow and that will take us down through very steep areas of great attractiveness, but, where, at some point, we will have to be careful not to slip. On the descent, the sharp rocky steeps of the Castillito de las Ventanillas attract attention.
We arrived at the romantic place where Fuente Techá is located, which has been recently restored. It's a good place to make a stop and get your hair back. Next to it, there is a pillar and a calera. In a few meters, we reach the Sierra track, at the point where the explanatory sign of the path we have been following is located. We take the track to the right for a stretch. We leave it to continue a downhill path that belongs to the PR-A 272 that we brought on the way and that goes out to the uphill lane.
After a small common section with the ascent itinerary, we leave it to follow a lane to the right that also goes towards Alozaina. The lane undergoes several zigzags that lend themselves to taking shortcuts on trails that cut the contour lines. Soon we will be back in Alozaina a few meters from where we start the route in the morning.
In short, an excellent route that mountaineers like with a soul of climbers and a body of hikers.
