Itinerary description
If you're looking to get out into the country, why not try the South Burnett Rail Trail? This old railway corridor has been converted into a wonderful 88km trail through the wonderful rural countryside between Kingaroy and Kilkivan.
Section 1- Kingaroy to Murgon. You can either walk or cycle through this sealed, 44km section. It's wonderfully flat with one slight rise as you leave Kingaroy, otherwise it feels almost downhill all the way. The track is all exposed to the sun so it does get hot in the warmer months. Most towns are only 5-10km apart, in this first section, so there are plenty of places to have refreshments and relax. To complete this 44km section to Murgon in one day, we rode bikes. Most hikers will walk 30km from Kingaroy and overnight at Wondai then 29km to Goomeri day 2, with the final leg (29km) to Kilkivan on day 3. Wooroolin, Wondai and Murgon are the most interesting towns in this leg as there is plenty of historical memorabilia to check out, plus hotels and eateries. The track is easy to follow with markers every 1km apart. For more information on this trail check out our Facebook Hike site- "Take A Hike- SE Qld".
