Itinerary description
If you're looking to get out into the country, why not try the South Burnett Rail Trail? This old railway corridor has been converted into a wonderful 88km trail through the wonderful rural countryside between Kingaroy and Kilkivan. Section 2- Murgon to Kilkivan (44km). Its a 16km, flat and open section from Murgon to Goomeri and the best of the unsealed track. You can either hike, horse ride or do as we did, and cycle. With poorer soils it turns from cropping to grazing once you head north past Murgon. Goomeri is a great place to have a rest as it has several cafes/ bakery, hotel plus some somes to explore. Once rested, continue your journey along the old railway line. Its 28km from here to Kilkivan. Despite travelling through some hilly areas the trail is relatively flat without any difficult inclines. Be aware that the first 10km of the track is very rough with lots of chunky gravel to negotiate. It gets slightly better as you head toward Kilkivan but its still a fairly rough trail all the way. Also, there are no towns on this section so take plenty of water and food. Once again its typical grazing country with plenty of hills, trees, cows and small creeks. On a cycle, Murgon to Goomeri only took us 3.5 hours of peddling. Most walkers will have stayed the previous night at Wondai, walked to and stayed over night, at Goomeri (30km), then completed the hike to Kilkivan (28km) the following day.
