Itinerary description
This is not a circular hike.
We parked the car in the big Parking Glocknerblick, next to Lucknerhaus. As it is inside a mountain road, to drive in this road you will need to pay a toll (1 day access/ 12 €).
In this parking there is a bus stop for Bus 952, which took us to the starting point of the hike in Spöttling-Taurer (Kals). Pay attention because the frequency of this bus is very long and there are only 4 services per day (not on Sundays).
The hike starts at the Parking of Spöttling-Taurer in Kals, with the steep trail number 712 for about 9 kms and 4-5 hours in constant ascent to climb 1.300 m, which will lead you directly to the hut Stüdlhütte (2.802 m), used by mountaineers as an approach just before climbing the Grossglockner summit.
The hike is breathtaking in all senses, but easy to follow and without any risk. Anyway one thing is clear, you must be fit, have strong legs and a good head for heights to climb 1.300 m in just 9 kms.
The meal at Stüdlhütte is really good, therefore you will have the chance to refull your batteries.
The descent during 8 kms to Lucknerhaus (1.918 m) is directly with the path 702 B, which passes by Lücknerhütte (2.241 m) at the middle of the descent. This descending trail is very comfortable from the beginning to the end.
Attention!!
- GPS did not calculate correctly the distance, because the total distance should be around 16 km (9 km upwards and 7 kms downwards).
- both directions of the hike are possible, but I would repeat exactly this one.
- good head for height is necessary in some points of the ascent.
- no fontaines during the way
- Stüdlhütte is very recommendable to eat&drink something, even to spend the night. Lücknerhütte is also a nice place to have a break.
- pullover, raincoat, winter jacket, boots and walking sticks are mandatory.
Amazing route with direct view of Grossglockner. Highly recommended.
++++
