Itinerary description
A short cabin trekking, fit for a (long) weekend, that provides a great sense of solitude. The hike's starting point is easily accesible by car, though quite remote. The final 10 km are over a well-maintained dirt road, winding towards the higher reaches of the spectacular Modalen. The first section, taking approximately 3 hours, is easy and mostly flat, crossing a wide and swampy glacial valley towards Solrenningen cabin. The second leg is more strenuous, involving 600 meters of elevation gain through often rough terrain that is usually snow covered until early July. However, the trail is well signposted and the views are commanding (look out for the Sognefjord). Also, Åsedalen cabin, your final destination for the day, is a quaint old farm house perched on a promontory next to an impressive waterfall. The third and final stretch of this trekking is fairly easy and mostly downhill, passing a series of lakes and old summer farms in fairly swampy terrain that is grazed by inquisitive sheep.

Cabins are open in summer - unstaffed. Payment is easy - just fill in a form! About 250 NOK pp per night. Becoming a member will get you a hefty discount, so worth it. Visit the DNT office in Bergen and register. Happy hiking - this one's great!
