Itinerary description
This was our first visit to the area following devastation caused by the Sierra Bermeja forest fire that started on the 8th September 21 burning for more than six weeks before finally being extinguished.
The huge blaze destroyed almost 9,600 hectares of land ( the equivalent in area of 15 x Gibraltar) in the municipalities of Estepona, Casares, Jubrique, Júzcar, Genalguacil, Faraján and Benahavís and claimed the life of an Infoca firefighter.
We start our hike as we did on the 26th January 20 from the car park at the junction between the MA-8301,MA-8302 and the side road that leads to the Pico de Los Reales. We ascend the MA-8302 where we leave the road and start our hike in earnest via the Algarrobo Gorge taking the more direct route out of the gorge which was steeper than the original route.
The route consists of ascending the Genalguacil slope towards Pico Los Reales through Puerto Pelado and the Colquillo de Junquillo, tracing the western rope of Los Realillos Hill. We link up with the Los Realillos Trail in the Puerto del Boquete de los Palos. Rather than following the trail all the way to Pico Los Reales we detour through the pine forest picking up the link road that descend from the peak to our starting point in the car park. We are in the Natural Area Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja.
Although of moderate difficulty the views are stunning and well worth the effort although deeply saddened by the devastation caused by the recent forest fire.
