Itinerary description
The starting point for this hike is the Montera del Torero Recreational Area equipped by the Los Alcornocales Natural Park for tourist use.
The route takes us towards the Montero del Torero vía the Chocolatero and Valdeinfierno Streams.
The Montera del Torero is a curious rock formation composed of limestone eroded over time to form the shape of a bullfighter's bust, excelling what would be his montera (hat or headdress of bullfighters)
The head is hollowed from ear to ear, forming a small cave that also has a hole to the outside, as a single eye , in what would be the face of the bullfighter. Also the roof of the cave has a special roughness, similar to Arabian Mocha , which evoke the inside of a skull and even the convolutions of the bullfighter's brain .
The Plaza de toros La Montera is a bull ring in Los Barrios, a town in the province of Cádiz at the southern edge of Spain, close to the British territory of Gibraltar, was opened in 2000 and named after the nearby rock formation that looks like a bullfighter's hat (Montera del torero in Spanish).
La Montera del Torero is one of the symbols of Los Barrios and there is a replica sculpture in one of the new squares of the town.
Cork oak trees are encountered throughout the route which can be harvested for the first time for cork bark after about 25 years. Thereafter, the tree bark is harvested every 9 years. A cork tree will be “stripped,” on average, sixteen times in its 150 to 200 life.
The second half of the hike picks up the Valdeinfiero trail which follows the Chocolatero stream for a while and thereafter meanders back to the starting point. All in all a short but very enjoyable hike.
