Itinerary description
From the neighborhood of El Cobre, up the old military firing range of Botafuegos, to the sites of Huerto de los Mellizos and Ventorrillo de la Trocha. Once in the Puerto del Viento (km 5'4), we look for the Carril de Las Corzas (km 8'6), until we reach Puerto de la Zarza (km 9'5), and from there we descend by the intersection of the Río de la Miel to the starting point.
The Río de la Miel represents one of the natural environments of greatest ecological value in the Campo de Gibraltar. Its privileged location, sheltered by the slopes of rugged mountains, provides a special microclimate, characterized by high humidity and the existence of cloud forests. The richness of endemic species, is due to the special climatic conditions, which allow the survival of numerous species representing the laurel forests of the tertiary era. Among the species present are numerous types of ferns, some of them from tropical regions. The fauna is typical of the Mediterranean forest, with roe deer, cerdalies, deer, jinetas and mongoose.
The scenic beauty of the place and the existence of important landmarks, such as the water mills of the Águila (in ruins) or Escalona (still in use). An old medieval bridge with only one eye. Remains of the Camino de la Trocha, which from the Middle Ages until the 19th century, was used as a shortcut to cross the Algeciras and Tarifa mountain ranges from Cádiz. The amazing waterfall known as La Chorrera. And the Path of the Prisoners.
