Itinerary description
Starting from Venta Jarandilla located I n the Los Alcornocales Natural Park we cross the bridge over the Guadarranque River where observing its lush gallery of forest.
We continue along the track until we find the trail that takes us past a lagoon which is served only by rainwater.
From here we follow the trail as it winds it’s way up towards the sandstone slab where the shelter known as Cueva de los Maquis is located.
The Maquis were the name given to the Republican Guerrillas who fought against the Franco Dictatorship.
The shelters which are small was said to be used by the Maquis for overnight stays and the storage of food/ ammunition.
Also these shelters contain paintings that date back at least 4000 years.
Carved into the rock face adjacent the shelter are the words:
VIVA EL COMMUNISMO, L. 1936
From here we make our way down towards the Guadarranque Reservoir admiring the beautiful viewpoints along the trail.
From here we pick up the track which takes us past the dam returning to our start point.

The route is as described rje.ellis and is very good. Caution should be take on route after Caves as route beside lake is very vague and SAT signal very poor. Secondly, beware that a permit is required to do this route, but there is no information as to where this can be obtained.

Thanks for the feedback and we’ve completed this route without requiring a permit on several occasions however situations change and apparently you now require one and obtainable from the Almoraima Ranch.
