Itinerary description
The starting point for this hike is Pelayo.
This adventure and it is an adventure which circumnavigates the Sierra del Algarrobo taking in a climb to the Pico El Algarrobo.
The views are stunning in all directions.
Looking South we have the Gibraltar straits with African Coast beyond and Jebel Musa with the Atlas Mountains.
Towards the East we have a ringside seat with stunning views of the Bay of Algeciras and Gibraltar.
Looking towards the North East as far as the eye can see: the Sierra de Grazalema, the Serranía de Ronda, Sierra Tejeda and even the highest peaks of Sierra Nevada are in view.
The trail itself consists of cork oak/ucalyptus forest and dense vegetation of low scrub so a little scratchy in places so if don’t mind a few scratches here and there shorts are fine otherwise long trousers recommended.
Regarding the vegetation, cork oaks, gall oaks and wild olive trees stand out, with their undergrowth of ferns. At the top of the hill, low scrub abounds, predominantly mastic, kermes oak, jerguenes, gorse, rockrose, jaguarzos, heather and heather. As for the fauna, it is possible to come across deer, Moorish roe deer, mongooses, foxes and wild boars. It is also common to see the flight of griffon vultures, falcons, kestrels and other birds of prey.
The vultures flew over to observe us as we descended Pico El Algarrobo.
During the hike we come across the Mirador del Algarrobo which is an old ornithological observatory for migratory birds that cross the strait.
A great hike with a few technical bits and sections of the final leg we’re starting to become overgrown so glad I brought the clippers to do a spot of pruning.
