Mount Rainier: Sunrise - Burroughs Mountain 2º - Freemount

We were very lucky to be able to do this route for various reasons, the road to Sunrise usually closes for the season at the end of September and in our case the road had been closed due to snowfall for a week and it was opened this morning, the weather had not been very good the previous days and the the next day it rained and finally, the road between Steven's Canyon has been closed for works from Monday to Friday throughout the summer, so we won the lottery of being able to do it and with impressive weather conditions.
After arriving at the Sunrise parking lot after almost 90 minutes by car from Ashford where we were staying, we began the route heading towards 1st. Burroughs Mountain. This section has a slight descent towards Shadows Lake and begins uphill with spectacular views of Mount Rainier and its glaciers. As we approached Mount Burroughs the snow began to appear and little by little it thickened and when we reached the junction we took the trail up to 2nd Burroughs Mountain where the snow was much thicker and where the views were spectacular. There we saw how some hikers continued towards 3 Burroughs Mountain but since there was a lot of snow and we wanted to go to Mount Freemount, we returned so we could take the trail to Freemount. The trails are not dangerous but being snowy you had to be very careful.
Mount Freemont is as or more spectacular than Burroughs because although it is further away from Mt. Rainier, it has a broader view. The Mt. Freemont cabin was closed but its 360-degree views are incredible. After Mt Freemont we turn back and when we reach the intersection we return to the parking lot in Sunrise where we finish one of the best routes of our trip through Washington.

Tuvimos muchísima suerte de poder hacer esta ruta por diversas causas, la carretera hasta Sunrise suele cerrar a fines de septiembre y en nuestro caso la carretera habia estado cerrada por nevadas desde hacía una semana, la climatología no había sido muy bueno los dias anteriores y el día siguiente llovío y por último, el cierre de la carretera entre de Steven´s Canyon ha estado cerrada de lunes a viernes durante todo el verano, por lo que nos tocó la lotería de poder hacerla y en unas condiciones climáticas impresionantes.
Tras llegar al aparcamiento de Sunrise después de casi 90 minutos de coche desde Ashford donde nos hospedábamos, comenzamos la ruta en dirección hacia la 1st. Burroughs Mountain. Este tramo tiene una ligera bajada hacia Shadows Lake y comienza en subida con unas vistas espectaculares del Monte Rainier y de sus glaciares. Cuando nos acercabamos al Monte Burroughs empezó a aparecer la nieve que poco a poco se fue espesando y al llegar al cruce tomamos el sendero de subida al 2nd Burroughs Mountain donde la nieve era bastante más espesa y donde las vistas eran espectaculares. Allí vimos como algunos senderistas continuaban hacia la 3 Burroughs Mountain pero como había bastante nieve y queríamos ir al Monte Freemount, retornamos para poder tomar el sendero al Freemount. Los senderos no son peligrosos pero al estar nevados había que ir con mucho cuidado.
El monte Freemont es tan o más espectacular que Burroughs porque aunque está más alejado de Mt. Rainier, tiene una vista más amplia. La cabaña del Mt. Freemont se encontraba cerrada pero sus vistas en 360 grados son increibles. Tras el mt Freemont retrocedemos y al llegar al cruce regresamos hacia el aparcamiento en Sunrise donde finalizamos una de las mejores rutas de nuestro viaje por Washington.
