Itinerary description
Sveningen measures a modest 842 m a.s.l., but nonetheless feels like a mountain. In fact, that goes for the entire valley. Tarns, glacial moraines, steep cliffs, jagged peaks, a proper treeline and ample snow in July: this is no walk in the park. The trail is well-signposted and also graced with signs sharing old legends, sayings and biblical oneliners. After a 2 km warming-up on a forest road, the trail narrows down to a small footpath, climbing ever more steeper. After one hour, one passes fjellbotn: a plateau, just above the timberline, riddled with old moraines and small tarns. Here the serious bit of the climb starts: 300 m in less than 1 km over a pretty rugged path. Not technical, but surely strenous. Well worth the effort though: views from the summit are unsurpassed on a good day, with vistas onto Folgefonna ice cap, the Atlantic ocean and Gullfjellet, the highest peak of the Bergen area.
