Itinerary description
Waypoints
Land God temple
A temple at a junction. The Taipei Grand Trail heads straight on. Right goes down to Beixing Temple (20 mins) and left goes down towards Lishan bridge trail head (30 mins).
Rest area and photo spot
At dusk this place fills up with photographers and their tripods. Also, there have been stray dogs here every time I’ve passed by, but they are very sleepy.
Junction
The Taipei Grand Trail goes up. The trail on the right is the fourth rope trail. As of February 2019, it seems to still be open.
Shrine and view
This is one of my favourite shrines in Taipei. I don’t know why, I just like it. Go left for a quick but worthwhile detour to Muzhi mountain.
Muzhi mountain
Muzhi mountain or thumb mountain has the best views of the walk so it’s really worth the extra two minutes.
Junction
After a couple of minutes walking down the road, the path doubles back up along a concrete trail.
Temple and toilet
Just beyond the temple, the Taipei Grand Trail turns left and up following the old rice trail to Xin Po Ridge. The right turn downhill head to the Te Hsing Coal Mine trail head.
忠正嶺安祿宮
A really cool temple with a fountain, toilets and a couple of Gods. From here the trail goes down the road.
Junction
To finish the first section of the south area grand trail, turn right towards Da’an.
Junction
The Grand Trail signs disappear for a bit here, but both left and right get to the same place.
Trail head
A bridge over some water takes you out to the end of the trail. Here you can find a map and a toilet. Just beyond that are the remains of a historic military tunnel.
