Itinerary description

A very mild walk from the Flemish village of Tervuren to the abbey of Rood-Kooster (or Rouge Clôitre) in Oudergem, excellent for a taste of the Zoniënbos (Forêt des Soignes), a beautiful, deep forest just a few kilometers off the centre of Brussels.

Get the Tram 44 at Montgomery for a picturesque ride to Tervuren; walk to the Musée de l'Afrique Centrale, in front of which starts this route. The terrain allows for multiple options, so it's highly recommended to take a map (and compass) with you, or either ask the friendly locals for indications (something more specific than 'to Brussels' is appreciated). Once you make it to Rood-klooster, make sure you enjoy a local beer or hot chocolate at the canteen, and of course admire the whole complex, which dates back to the 14th century. When satisfied, you can undo the last kilometer and aim for Drève des Brûlés, a car park and stop for Tram 44, which will take you back to Montgomery.

Between 2 and 3 hours should be enough to complete the route, obviously depending on pace, food-stops and photographic aspirations. Please be advised that this route (made on Dec 2012) was uploaded manually and it's only an approximation of the actual track.

I have followed this trail  View more

I did this trail three times last Autumn, twice in the correct direction and once in reverse. I did deviate from the marked trail somewhat--rather than heading up onto the road on the approach to Rood-k, I took a look on Google Maps and found some paths going a little further south which kept me in the forest itself.
I thoroughly recommend going at that time of year, it was stunning. One thing about this trail though is that there is a long, straight, flat bit in the middle which goes on forever and is sooooooooooooooo boring.
