Itinerary description
The great thing about hiking regularly in Asturias is that you still discover unexpected places! The hike of this week is a good example.
🥉 It leads to not-so-ancient copper and cobalt mines. The Neolithic Texeo mines can be found on the edges of mount Aramo, in Central Asturias. They were first exploited in the Stone Age, using antlers and stones to extract the material. Then, they were forgotten, until exploitation started again in 1888, with the help of English investments. The mines were ultimately closed in 1955.
👷♀️ Next to the former mines, the route leads past former mining villages and installations like chimneys, hoppers, and loading docks. Most impressive though are the 'bocaminas' or the mouth, of the mines, which sometimes measure 3m in diameter. With care, you can even enter some of them for a real mining experience!
