Itinerary description
This circular walk starts from the plateau that the small hamlet that Dylife stands on. It's a rather bleak lunar landscape where you park but you soon head into meadows as you drop down to a small stream. The path back out is a little indistinct but you head north and then east until you get your first view of the Afon Twymyn valley from Craig y Maes. This is a classic landscape of the Cambrian Mountains, a plateau broken only by glacial gouging and by the deep clefts of river valleys: these two processes together have created the landform which exists today. The steep descent to valley bottom take you through a small settlement of roundhouses and down to the river. You head along the river taking care to follow the path that's been washed away in at least one place. We made a mistake at one point when we kept too close to the river instead of heading up into the woods for a short distance. Looking up from the road at Cilcwm Farm is the immense natural amphitheatre in the side of Creigiau Pennant. This is the furthest point of the walk and from here you head back up the valley with various spectacular views. Climbing back to the road you get views of the famous Ffrwd Fawr falls at the top of the gorge. You emerge onto the road. Unfortunately the last leg is on the road and although it isn't very busy, vehicles travel at speed so take care.
