Itinerary description

This hike is the first day of a five day hike between Dana and Petra. The trekking follows some parts of the official Jordan Trail, but for the most part ignores the official route and does it own thing. This means a lot more altitude, crossings through mountains and gorges and hikes that can become quite strenuous.

The first day is however more or less the same as the route of the official Jordan Trail. Where the official trail stops at the eco lodge of Wadi Feynach, this route continues for one or two kilometers to another Bedouin camp. It's by far the easiest of the bunch with a deep descent and some moderate climbs. The hike is rather easy - especially compared to the other days - but still the many rocks and stones require some sure-footedness.

The best parts of this day are without a doubt the views which are truly breath-taking. For me it was the first time I saw such a gigantic canyon and after each corner I was stopping to take some pictures. The trip to Jordan is worth for visiting this alone. Although the Wadiy Feynan is mostly a rock desert the landscape is surprisingly varied with different colours and shapes of rocks.

The colour of the landscape is dominated by the red and brown of the sandstones, but there are a few green spots such as the resting area after roughly eight kilometer. Although the descent is still continuing, the canyon is almost crossed and wide desert planes start to dominate the view. When nearing the eco lodge of Wadi Feynan the route is using gravel roads and starts to lose a bit of its charm. The distance of 16 km is perfect for this panoramic hike.
