Tiro Pichón – Puerto Arenal – Arroyo de la Breña
This is a Circular walk which starts at the parking area just past the giant ‘H’ arch (entrance to the shooting range – Club de Tiro Jarapalo).
The start of the parking entrance is on your right on the A404 just past Km16 (coming from Alhaurin el Grande). Parking near the start of the walk is not allowed anymore, you will be towed away).
It uses some off the beaten trails and then picks up the Presidiarios sendero, until you reach the Arenal pass / Plato (where there is an interesting rock formation to your left that looks like a monk praying).
Up to this point the route is mostly uphill. This spot is also good to take a break.
The start of the descent on the otherside of the mountain is a lot more challenging. The surface is very sandy / stony / rocky and a bit steeper. I recommend good walking boots and at least one walking pole.
This side of the mountain will have the sun and great views of the bay of Málaga. Sierra Nevada and La Maroma were snow capped.
The route then descends into the dry Arroyo de la Breña stream, eventually passing Los Pinos de Alhaurin urbanisation on your right, before finishing back at the start.
It was a great hike even though there was substantial evidence of last years fire.
