TMR Day 5: Zermatt - Colle del Teodulo

The fifth day of the Monte Rosa Tour.
Today you shall reach the highest point of the whole tour: the Theodul Pass.
At first you need to decide how to reach the front of the Theodul Glacier: either on foot or by cablecar and, if you choose the latter, either to step out at Furi (1867 m) or at Trockener Steg (2939 m). Due to the adverse weather conditions (rain and hailstorm), I opted for this very last alternative.
Exit the station and look around you: you find yourself immersed in an alpine paradise. Head south and soon you will touch the glacier’s feet. Follow the tracks of the ski slopes, stay close to the pilons and keep in sight the Rifugio Guide del Cervino, situated atop the Testa Grigia (Grauhaupt). Before reaching it, turn right and walk a connecting ski slope to the Theodul Pass and the Rifugio Teodulo, where you can rest while enjoying a breathtaking panorama straight on the Matterhorn.
Remember: this day entails the traversing of a glacier. If you are used to this sort of activity, fine, otherwise let me emphasize the importance of having the correct equipment (e.g. crampons, ropes, gaiters). According to the situation of the ice coverage and the weather, you may or may not need them. Also, if your objective is just the Monte Rosa Tour, stick to the track; by leaving it, be aware of the potential presence of crevices.

Il quinto giorno del Tour del Monte Rosa.
Decidete come giungere alla base del Ghiacciaio del Teodulo: se a piedi o con l’ovovia e, se con l'ovovia, se scendere a Furi (1867 m) o al Trockener Steg (2939 m). A causa delle condizioni meteo avverse (pioggia e grandine), ho optato per quest’ultima alternativa.
Uscite dalla stazione, guardatevi attorno ed inspirate a pieni polmoni: vi trovate in un vero e proprio paradiso alpino. Muovetevi ora verso sud e presto vi troverete ai piedi del ghiacciaio. Seguite le tracce delle piste da sci e rimanete vicino ai piloni degli impianti di risalita, mantenendo sempre in vista il Rifugio Guide del Cervino, sito in cima alla Testa Grigia. Poco prima di raggiungerlo, girate a destra e percorrete una pista di connessione fino al Colle del Teodulo e al Rifugio Teodulo, dove potrete riposarvi ammirando un panorama unico direttamente sul Cervino.
Ricordate: in questo giorno si deve attraversare un ghiacciaio. Se siete abituati a questo genere di attività, perfetto, altrimenti permettetemi di sottolineare l’importanza di un equipaggiamento adatto (per esempio, ramponi, corde e ghette). In base alla situazione del manto nevoso e del ghiaccio, potreste averne o non averne bisogno. Inoltre, se il vostro obiettivo è semplicemente il Tour del Monte Rosa, attenetevi alle piste; lasciandole, siate consci della potenziale presenza di crepacci.
