Itinerary description
Starting from Gite les Gabelous, we went up towards the church then we took the trail to the right to reach the grand canal route. The normal GR58 is lower along the river on the road but we took the grand canal route because it is much nicer. I highly recommend the "Grand canal" route. After 200 meters initial ascent, the trail becomes nearly flat and easy until reaching "Clausis" where you have another ascent to the "col de Chamoussière" (around 500 m ascent). At this time of the year (June 16th), there was still lot of snow on the way up to the col so we couldn't really follow the original trail covered partly by snow especially at higher altitude. The final climb to the col was made left to the trail on the rocks to avoid the snow. When you do this trail in summer, i recommend to follow the trail that will be clear instead of taking the upper trail shown here because it is slippery. Reaching "Col de Chamoussière", we found much more snow on the northern side of the col with a steep descent. No trace of any trail, snow is covering much of the descent. We had our picnic lunch at the col and we waited for the guardians of nearby refuges who were "opening" the trails by placing wooden poles to mark waypoints. We went down to Refuge Agnel with the guardians. The snow trail was difficult and sometimes we were going deep in the snow higher than our knees! Full gaiters are very useful in this case. Finally we reached Refuge Agnel. The staff is very helpful and welcoming. Hot shower and tasty dinner ended our second day.
