Itinerary description
From "7 degrés Est" Gîte, we crossed the river to continue on the GR 58. From l'Echalp to La Monta, the trail by the river is easy and nice in the forest. At La Monta, we crossed another bridge to pass by "La Monta" refuge and church. From there, we took the right to start what seems an endless ascent in the forest. The trail is clear. Before arriving to the summit of "La Lauzière", there was large patches of snow. We didn't follow the GR58 exactly at this part. After this long ascent (around 800 m), we reached the summit of La Lauzière and from there we continued on the "Crête de Gilly" to the "Collette de Gilly". We continued our way up to the summit of Gilly where we had our lunch. Back on the same route to the "Collette de Gilly", we went to the left and we followed the trail easily till Abriès. (Our previous plan was to go to "Col D'urine" but there was still lot of snow making the trail risky). The descent was long but beautiful with lots of flowers in the forest at this time of the year. We spent our night at "Ancolie Bleue", a charming gîte d'étape with clean rooms and beautiful garden. The food was tasty and the owners (Valérie et Philippe) were so helpful. I highly recommend this gîte d'étape at Abriès.
