Itinerary description
The ascent to pic Malrif from Abriès is the longest continuous ascent (around 1300 m). The beauty of the scenery will make you forget the effort you are doing! From Abriès, we started our way up entering the valley till we reached "Le Malrif" hamlet. We continued our long tough way to Lac Malrif while having breathtaking 360 deg sceneries. We had to make some snow traverse. The Lake was almost fully iced. From the lake, we didn't take the normal GR58 route because there was lot of snow and ice this way. Instead, we took the trail on the crest to the right tp reach Pic Malrif first. The last 50 m of the pic were covered by snow so we climbed it carefully. From the pic, we went down to the Col de Malrif. The start of the descent in the valley was mostly covered by snow so we did our own snow trail before getting back to the GR58. The long descent to the refuge was easy but the scenery was not very attractive. We finally reached the "Fonts de Cervières" refuge which is a real hamlet. Old beautiful buildings partially renovated with beautiful views around. The owner (an old nice man) and his son are very welcoming and helpful. The food is so good! We passed our night there planning to go to Brunissard via Souliers on Day 6.
