Itinerary description
The final day is the big day. We were covering two stages in one day so we woke early and we started at 6h30 before sunrise. The day before we checked on "europaweg" website that the europaweg was open so we decided to take the haute route (Europaweg). The start of the walk was flat then we started going up in the forest. The ascent is long but not technical. We reached a kind of plateau where we continued to go higher slowly till we reached Saint Bernard Statue. From there, we went back on the Euroweg and we continued to go higher. At some point, we saw a plaque mentioning that the "Europaweg" is closed! We tried to continue but there was another trail closure from the other side. We decided to continue higher trying a higher passage so we reached a mountain pass and we found ourselves walking facing the glacier. Again, we reached a point of rock falls impossible to cross. We had to change our plan and we went down to the river crossing a forest trail not shown on wikiloc but on maps.me. This trail was difficult to find and wasn't maintained at all. The descent was tough and slippery. We finally reached a good trail coming from Saint Niklaus and we continued down till the river where we took the "bahnweg" to Zermatt. The "river trail" is not as bad as we thought, it includes some beautiful forest trails and mountain bike trails.
