Itinerary description
Great circular route that shows the variety of the Costa Caparica!
Coming from Lisbon you can catch a ferry in Belém. In only 10 minutes you'll cross the river Tejo. The ferry will take you directly to Trafaria. The hiking route starts at the Estação Fluvial (boat station) of Trafaria. You follow the perfectly marked route (part of the GR11-E) in the direction of Fonte da Telha. The diversity of the hike is great! Tipical (non touristic) Portuguese villages, beautiful panoramic views over the Costa Caparica and Lisbon, interesting landmarks like the Forte da Raposeira, Forte de Alpena and the Convento dos Capuchos, peaceful nature (dunes, forest, farmland) and of course... Lots of beach!
Halfway to Praia do Castelo you'll pass the village Capucho where you can enjoy a coffee at the friendly local restaurant Capuchinhos. On the Costa de Caparica you'll find beach bars to suit every taste. I prefer the more simple ones like Praia do Castelo, where you can enjoy great fresh fish from the barbecue.
Hiking back to Trafaria, you simply follow the beach up north! I walked all the way to the remarkable small fishermen settlement Covo do Vapor on the mouth of the river Tejo. If you wish, you can shorten the hike a bit, by exiting the beach earlier - at Praia de São João - and go straight to Trafaria from there. Make sure not to miss the last boat from Trafaria back to Lisbon, it leaves around 21h00.
Enjoy your hike! <3
