One of our objectives during our trip to Vietnam and adventure during our stay in Sa Pa was the highest mountain in Indochina, Phan Xi Păng (Fansipan), 3,143 m high above sea level. A demanding route located in one of the areas with the most variable climate in Vietnam. Even so, our intention was to crown its summit and that's what we did! To her!
START:
To start the route, we will meet in Sa Pa with our local guide and a taxi that will take us to the port of Trạm Tôn, where we will begin the route. In Sa Pa, the day was relatively clear. However, as we approached the port, the day was getting worse... When we arrived at Trạm Tôn, a cloudy day with light drizzle awaited us! We started with a good temperature, without excessive heat and with a lot of humidity.
DESCRIPTION:
After reading and reading all the information we found on the internet, we were not clear to what extent the difficulty of the route or the weather could be decisive. We decided not to book anything in advance for our stay that day in Sa Pa, just the hotel night. Once there, in Sa Pa, the day before, we found out about the possibilities we would have to ascend Phan Xi Păng (Fansipan). We knew that it would not be a mountain that would offer us many difficulties, but without knowing it, we did not venture much, especially in a place completely unknown to us. It seemed that the route was clear and its access relatively easy, so our idea was to take a taxi to take us to Trạm Tôn, the starting point of the route, and from there, start the day on our own. After informing ourselves there in Sa Pa, everyone advised us to hire a local guide, logically. Perhaps they take advantage of the lack of knowledge of the mountaineers who seek information, claiming that they are complicated routes, that if something happens to us no one would take care of it, that the climate is very harsh, etc. Given this and with the idea of not complicating our lives, we hired a local guide. Even so, from here, I can tell you that if the day is good, the weather is good, you are fit and have experience, it is completely unnecessary to hire a guide, since the path is very visible and does not offer any loss. The only and biggest problem could be the intense fog that forms in this area, so be extremely careful if you encounter changeable weather or go during the rainy season.
The first part of the route travels along a very beautiful path, among vegetation and trees, and in a slight descent. Every time the path lost level, we asked ourselves: "Why? We have to climb to 3,143 meters!" Our guide is the first and moves at a quite demanding pace, he was in a hurry! Thank goodness we like to enjoy everything we do and he quickly realized that he shouldn't move forward like that, because he would just keep climbing!
At the height of the river, the humidity was very noticeable. We cross a beautiful stone bridge to continue along the correct path and continue, now slightly ascending.
The route is beautiful and the day was still ugly... Our only concern was thinking that we were not going to see absolutely anything during the route and when we reached the summit. We cross another type of bridge, this time made of wooden planks, and begin a section along an installed walkway. Throughout this first section, we realize that the route is well equipped.
We continue on a slight climb and we are adding kilometers to our legs. We crossed a couple more bridges, both on perfectly placed wooden planks. The route advances along the false plain and has no complications.
After 300 meters of accumulated elevation gain and 3 and a half kilometers traveled, we arrive at the first of the two camps that the route offers as a possibility to stay, eat and drink. Even so, when we passed by, there was no noticeable movement, so it is easy for it to be a camp usable only on guided or contracted excursions.
We continue the route towards Phan Xi Păng (Fansipan) without major complications and through well-marked terrain, sometimes a little muddy. We continue on a slight climb and the day is giving us some respite. The drizzle has stopped and clearings appear in the sky!
After 5 kilometers of the route, we began to ascend with greater physical demand. We have completed half of the route, but not too much accumulated unevenness. Most of the ascent remains and here we will begin to gain altitude more quickly.
We reached another Vietnamese couple and their corresponding guide, the latter in flip flops, and so hot! The Vietnamese boy suffered at every step, it was his first trekking... It is incredible how unprofessional the local guides are, who care very little about anything other than going up, down and opening the bag. They didn't pay attention to every step we took. Our guide didn't worry about anything, although he didn't have to. But the guide of the Vietnamese couple moved forward in the same way, even when his boys were having a hard time and were really tired. On one occasion we told him that his boys were tired, that he should look back... Anyway... Another piece of information that let us know that hiring a guide only serves to accompany you and make you a sandwich...
The day was clearing and we began to enjoy spectacular views over the valley! We shared a good time climbing with the Vietnamese boys, always at a calm pace and without rushing.
As we climb, we complete this demanding section, which on many occasions looked like a stone staircase. The path advances through the highest part of the ridge that we are following, but it does not offer any sensation of vertigo, since the vegetation is dense and covers the path very well.
We continue the route between stone steps and path, always without major complications. We overcome a metal staircase, the first of many that we will find!
After overcoming the first demanding part of the route, we reach the most complicated area, not only because of the difference in altitude to be overcome in a few meters, but also technically speaking. Without being anything out of this world for people accustomed to the mountains, we will overcome a stretch of continuous metal stairs, descents and climbs, many of them equipped with nailed logs and planks placed as steps. It is noted that the route is adapted to the intense rains and the changing climate of the area. We appreciate all this help, since otherwise we would be treading mud for much of the climb. With some skill, we are overcoming this fun stretch!
The day progresses and, despite gaining altitude, the temperature is rising. The clouds run from side to side and we can enjoy spectacular views of the entire environment around us. We are at more than 2,700 meters high.
After 6 and a half kilometers of ascent, we arrived at the second and last camp. Another place where we can enjoy some service, although we found it the same as the first, without any activity. Brief rest to give time for the other climbing companions to arrive, somewhat behind in the most complicated section. Our pace was faster, so we decided to continue the route with our guide, before stopping for lunch.
We leave the camp behind and continue along comfortable terrain. Soon we found a nice waterfall!
We continue the route and the clouds give us some views over the top of Phan Xi Păng (Fansipan)! There seems to be an atmosphere!
We continue in a slight ascent, calmer than during the previous part, setting our objective on a type of hill that we can see in the distance. We will eat at this hill. A last effort while endless insects fly near us!
We travel almost 8 kilometers and arrive at the hill, where we will stop for lunch. The food was brought to us by the friendly guide, who immediately began to prepare a good snack for us! A good sandwich that didn't lack anything: tomato, cucumber, pork, butter, a pretty tasty spice and some more sauce. We really enjoyed the place, as the hill offers sublime views. The clouds move quickly! Now we are in the fog and now we are enjoying spectacular views! After a while the other guide arrives with his Vietnamese partner, who is also preparing to eat. A good time resting and ready to face the last part of the climb!
There is little left and, from the hill, we will face the section that can be most discouraging... A descent of about 50 meters that forces us to gain altitude again! It's not difficult or demanding, but it's a bitch! During the descent, a metal ladder helps us overcome some steps.
With the height lost, it is time to make up the lost meters again. We will do it along several metal stairs, following a Pindian course and without loss. We already hear the sound of the cable car that is close to the top, although it is not very visible due to the great cloud cover that surrounds us.
After overcoming the flight of stairs, we arrive at Sun World Fansipan Legend, the upper station of the cable car. We knew that there was a cable car that went up to 3,000 meters above sea level and a temple, but we didn't imagine that there was almost a city set up there! Incredible! A cable car, a shop, a restaurant, several temples, viewpoints, a rack railway, marble statues, staircases and much more! A very touristy place, due to its cable car access, of course...
Ahead, just over 100 meters to reach the top! We leave the upper cable car station behind and arrive at the temple area, where we find an information sign about the place. The views are impressive, although the day is quite cloudy...
Among tourists, we climb along the stairs that are enabled to access the summit, always at a calm pace. Most of the tourists were oriental and were enjoying a leisurely morning in the highest part of Vietnam. There's little left, last stairs!
After almost 10 kilometers and more than 1,300 meters of elevation gain, we reach the summit of Phan Xi Păng (Fansipan) (3,143 m). More than 6 hours climbing, at a calm pace and enjoying exceptional views. Upstairs, the panoramic view was incredible. The height is noticeable, despite the large amount of clouds there are. The luck is that they move a lot, leaving clear and beautiful perspectives of the mountains and the deep and beautiful valleys that surround us. Upon reaching the top, we take the typical photos required, in order to immortalize the moment, at which point a good group of orientals begin to take us by the arm to take photos. The outfit and our faces from having walked up caught their attention, and they did not hesitate to want to take a photograph with us. They moved us from side to side, now here, now there... We looked like two Hollywood actors! How funny! They are crazy... Without a doubt, great moments at the end of the ascent of Phan Xi Păng (Fansipan), the highest mountain in Indochina: Phan Xi Păng.
After savoring everything that the summit offered us, we said goodbye to our guide, since we would go down by cable car and he would walk with his companion. Here we end the route!
CONCLUSION:
Tremendous, demanding and beautiful route through the roof of Indochina, the Phan Xi Păng (Fansipan) (3,143 m). Dream trails, very adapted to complete the trekking. You only need a certain skill in the mountains to overcome some climbs, but without major complications. Of course, almost 10 kilometers and more than 1,300 meters of unevenness are noticeable, making it a physically hard day. The beautiful views that we get throughout the entire route and the fantastic panoramic view from the summit compensate for the effort made! A mountain that we will always remember! Highly recommended!

Mil gracias!! Es casi imposible perderse en un camino de escaleras pero aun asi ni me hubiera atrevido a ir sin tu gpx (y es muy tranquilizador sabe "ok, estoy aqui, esto es x altura, y ademas prueba qje no me he equivocado de camino).
PERO, como soy yo me las arregle pa despistarme un momento (en algun punto entre en segundo campamento y el collado) y acabar yendo por un camino paralelo que en TEMPORADA SECA es practicable y acaba en el templo son nhac sin cruzarse antes de eso no con nadie del teleferico (pero involucra trepar por una cascadita).
No baje a patita sino a en teleferico asi que no se pero lo cierto es que me parecio que podia estar cerrado tu camino, estaba bloqueada con bancos la bajada en esa direccion y no supe ver otra pero tal vez fue cosa de la niebla
Mañana vuelvo a subir a ver que tal.
piedrecitas, muchas gracias por tu comentario. Cuando fuimos nosotros, la verdad es que no había mucha alternativa. Camino bien marcado y con pocas opciones de perderse. Aún así, es un lugar en el que la niebla casi siempre está presente, por la alta nubosidad, y conviene ir muy atento! Saludos!
Segundo intento segunda perdida... Creo...Edta vez llegue al cable car justo por su ultima torre y rodee el edificio hasta saltar el muro (ni la primera ni la ultima wue lo hace...hay apoyada una escala) de un templo altisimo cerrado al publico y de ahi sali por los baños...
Ese no ers el camino tampoco verdad?
piedrecillas, el camino oficial pasa muy cerca de una de las torres del teleférico. Justo después, hay que adentrarse en el complejo Sun World Fansipan Legend, pasando por la estación superior, la tienda, el restaurante, etc., y abandonarlo hacia la zona de templos, por donde se accede al punto más alto, ya sin perdida. Saludos!
Pues que feucho de repente el camino oficial! Km de escaleras con barandilla y de repente parece que te estes colando destrangis, jajaja
piedrecillas, estoy de acuerdo. El ambiente y la ciudad que hay montada arriba estropea un poco el punto de aventura de la ruta! Saludos!

Hola, estamos pensando en seguir la ruta, tenemos una pregunta porque en Sapa nos dicen que es obligatorio subir con guíaporque es parque natural y se necesita un permiso, es esto así?
Nos podéis decir como lo habéis hecho vosotros?
Casablanca76, cierto, es Parque Natural, pero desconozco si se necesita un permiso especial para acceder a la cumbre. Nosotros nos informamos todo lo que pudimos, pero apenas encontramos información. Cuando llegamos allí, al preguntar en el hotel, nos dijeron que podíamos acceder sólos, pero que era muy aconsejable ir con guía, por el camino, para no perderse o por si pasa algo (si pueden sacar dinero, pues mejor...). Aparte, la niebla y la nubosidad es muy frecuente allí. Por otro lado, la ruta no tiene ninguna pérdida, y más aún yendo con track. Sólo hay que fijarse en un par de puntos de la ruta, llegando al final. Si estás acostumbrad@ a la montaña, no tendrás problema en llegar arriba. Nosotros no nos complicamos porque no teníamos mucho tiempo y, siguiendo los consejos del hotel, decidimos contratar un guía, o más bien un chaval que iba delante de nosotros y que nos preparó un bocadillo vegetal, porque de guía no tiene nada... Si tenemos que volver a tomar la decisión ahora, no contrataríamos guía y subiríamos a nuestro aire. Otra cosa es que sea "obligatorio", aunque eso puede ser una estrategia local para conseguir dinero, porque es bastante caro.
Conclusión: si no quieres complicarte, contrata guía; y si eres de montaña y te aseguras que puedes acceder sin guía, pues adelante, porque no tendrás problema ninguno. Lo único, mucho ojo con el clima porque el desnivel que se gana es mucho, y el tiempo cambia considerablemente.

Soy alpinista con experiencia, pero como me dijeron que los rangers no nos iban a dejar pasar y ya solo nos quedaba un día en la zona, pillamos una guía.
Una joven Hmong muy maja, pero no muy en forma o algo enferma y tuvimos que estar esperándole contínuamente. Nos pidió disculpas mil veces.
No vimos ningún ranger cuando empezamos el recorrido a las 6:30 de la mañana. Siuppngo que si
(y 2) Supongo que si vas pronto no hay nadie en la entrada. Si te pillan por el camino siempre puedes decir que te has perdido de tu grupo.
Un recorrido muy bello a pesar de que nos tocó nublado.
El final es un poco deprimente: un parque temático religioso-capitalista cutre y kitsch. La empresa que lo construyó tiene otros seis por Vietnam.
La cumbre rodeada a un par de metros de distancia por una valla de madera con un cartel que dice: montaña sagrada no pasar

Qué pena el parque temático que se tienen montado.
Una subida preciosa y contra todo forecast, con tiempazo. Para descender si que se metió la niebla y en el teleférico solo hemos visto nubes.
27/10/22 hemos hecho la subida sin guía. Llegamos a las 4am de Hanoi un poco improvisando, llamamos un taxi que se enrolló para acercarnos al alojamiento, esperarnos y llevarnos al punto de comienzo de esta ruta. Por el camino le preguntamos sobre el tema del guía obligatorio (90€ nos han pedido los del alojamiento, por barba, por acompañarnos) y bueno, que sí, que los rangers miran un montón, que si te pones tonto por subir sólo que te retienen durante la mañana … pero bueno, que si no se lo decíamos a nadie que pasábamos. Ahora imaginaos la situación, no eran ni las 6 de la mañana y de cuclillas con el taxista en cabeza pasando por la caseta de los rangers en súper secreto… todos emocionados y con la adrenalina disparada 😂😂
El camino está muy preparado (no tiene pérdida posible) y sobre todo, si eres montañero experimentado, pienso que no te aporta nada el guía (van en chanclas y agotados). La dificultad está pues en que es un 3k y que son una pasada de escaleras, te quedas molido de piernas y más como nosotros (haciendo noche en un bus cama y sin desayunar decente). En el campamento 2 hablamos con una pareja y su guía que nos contaba que se hacía la ruta 3 veces a la semana para arriba y para abajo…
Ventaja del guía que me ha dado muchísima envidia: cuando coronas la cima te da una medalla de ‘Fansipan conqueror’ que no he visto en las tiendas de souvenirs …
Cuando decidáis bajar en cable sabed que vale lo mismo bajar que subir y bajar. Arriba nadie controla el tíquet (no se si es porque estamos en temporada baja), total que puedes bajar gratis si quieres… solo timas al parque temático 🤭

La verdad es que es muy incongruente la obligación de contratar guía, pues al final no te aporta nada, tan sólo un buen bocadillo y la medalla que comentas (a nosotros no nos dieron nada, pero ya fuimos hace varios años…). Pues yo he tenido q abortar la subida, he llegado y los Rangers, al ir solo sin guía me querían cobrar 1.500.000 Dong unos 60€!!!! Ni loco pago eso, asiq me han seguido durante 3km por la carretera para ver q no me colaba por ningún lado, hablando con la gente de aquí me dicen q suben gratis, asiq quizá mañana lo vuelva a intentar

A día de hoy, 5/08/23, hemos subido sin guía, saliendo a las 4:30 de la mañana. Al entrar al camino, hemos oído un grito (quizás un ranger?). Todo bien, el camino está bastante bien adaptado. Al bajar, a 3km del final, nos han emboscado 3 rangers. Una nos ha apuntado con la pistola... Otro llevaba una porra. Nos han confiscado los móviles. Uno ha cogido una piedra del suelo. Y con todo eso, querían hacernos entrar en la oficina. Por suerte, hemos encontrado un grupo de españoles con su guía. El guía, que hablaba español, nos ha permitido comunicar con los rangers (que no hablaban inglés). Multa 2.000.000 por cabeza, y gracias a la ayuda del guía, sino querian 5M. Conclusión, sino queréis una experiencia similar, ya sabéis lo que toca, pagar al tremendo negocio que tienen montado...
Lmaso22, ostras, lamento mucho la experiencia. Cuando estuvimos nosotros, ya nos comentaban que era mejor con guía y no arriesgamos. No nos gusta que se pongan puertas al campo, y a día de hoy, por obligación, no haríamos una actividad así! La montaña es otra cosa! Saludos!
Buena descripción de la ruta, así al menos puedo ver lo que al final no hice. Hace poco más de una semana estuvimos por la zona, pero descartamos completamente el ascenso porque lo del guía sinceramente no lo veía necesario, más a estas alturas con tanto GPS, y en mi caso que tengo experiencia. Y la verdad que no quise jugármela a multas ni nada, tan lejos de casa. Se hace raro ascender a un tres mil a golpe de funicular, pero cuando vuelva a casa, ya me desquitaré. Qué lástima que sea puro y duro negocio.

Nosotros finalmente nos decidimos a hacerlo y efectivamente es una ruta que el camino está muy muy claro ( a pesar de que nos tocará un día de absoluta niebla) y no como te lo venden ( que decían que te perdías con facilidad) además de que añadían que es OBLIGATORIO de ir con guía. NEGOCIO.
En la ruta nos encontramos a varios grupos y todos íbamos con nuestros respectivos guías. Creo que ya nadie se la juega a ir sin guía por el tema de las posibles multas

albergue pintueles, cuando fuimos nosotros, te animaban mucho a contratar un guía local, pero no era indispensable. Recuerdo la experiencia de gente que ascendió sin problemas en solitario. Con el paso de los años, la situación ha cambiado mucho, habiendo rangers por la zona y evitando que se acceda a la montaña sin guía. Las multas son bastante importantes. Es una ruta evidente y que se puede hacer en solitario sin problema, y somos de la idea de no poner barreras al monte, pero es lo que hay. Ellos mandan! Nosotros contratamos guía porque quisimos subir sin problemas y el precio estaba bastante ajustado. Hoy en día, el precio está mucho más disparado y resulta complicado acceder sin guía, sea la hora que sea. Si tuviésemos que ascender hoy, probablemente no lo haríamos. Ahora bien, es una decisión muy personal! Espero haberte ayudado! Saludos!
