THE ROUTE: Today is our last day of hiking and we will do it twice, now we will go up to the Hivjufossen waterfall and this afternoon we will go around Lake Stolsvatn, and tomorrow we will arrive in Oslo where the crossing ends.
We park in a space enabled on the RV50 road and opposite we have some signs with the beginning of the route. We are inside the Hallingskarvet National Park, we will do the circular route, lengthening the climb to mitigate the unevenness.
Immediately we enter the tight birch forest, only some firs appear in the upper part. The autumnal photosynthesis has begun in these latitudes and in fifteen days the brown colors will be the majority beginning with the ferns.
The largest birch masses (Betula pendula) are found in the coldest areas. They say that birch is a diuretic and is also recommended for problems such as arthritis or tendonitis. It is also used on roofs as a moisture insulator.
Ancient legends believe that the birch emits a powerful flow of love that protects the harmony of feelings. For this reason, the recipes of the past said that you had to carry a small branch of birch in order to find love.
The Nordic shamans considered it sacred and the "guard of the door", for that reason they recommended to plant two birches next to the door. Two and not one, since the birch, they said, suffers from loneliness just like humans.
They had to be planted to the right of the door, not to the left, since the right is the solar side of life, that of the future. While the left identifies with the past. We passed several good sized anthills.
We also observed some mushrooms and in stumps "tinder fungi" (Formes formentarius) with which amadou was prepared, a spongy and inflammable substance that was primitively used to set fire.
We pass through flooded areas that form peat bogs. Then we reach a clearing in the forest that allows us to partially see the waterfall of Hivjufossen, and shortly after we find elk droppings, but it is very difficult to see a specimen.
The trail is perfectly marked Norwegian style, horizontal or vertical red stripes, indicating the direction, or a mark similar to a "T" tilted to the right, indicating the direction to the destination.
Further on we find the remains of a very old building, possibly of shepherds, made with dry stone and slabs that preserve the entrance and a window finished off with wooden beams and trunks of trees.
We ford a stream and reaching the highest hills the birch forest begins to thin gradually, opening windows and looks to the valley. We crossed another corridor of vegetation until we ascended the highest hill.
On such a clear day the looks from this hillock are impressive. We see most of the Hallingsharvet National Park, it is an extensive plateau 35 kilometers long by five wide.
It is worth stopping to contemplate the deep valleys and the high mountain ranges crowded with forest mass and, some of them, the highest, without vegetation, but with traces of snow on its most shady slopes.
The path continues descending a little to cross a language of birch forest and surround without going up the next hill, from where we see the meanders and streams of the Storekvelvi river. The waterfall feels close.
We arrive at a marked crossroads where the red marks show us the next destination. We climb the last rocky enclave and from above, the view is colossal. The river comes encased and falls down the slope with little inclination.
It is like a runaway torrent downhill. The waterfall of Hivjufossen consists of two parts, the first is the one we are seeing from the rocks and that is thrown down the slope with a medium inclination like a stream.
And about two hundred meters below is the lower waterfall that falls vertically about thirty meters down a rocky front. We will not access this part of the waterfall due to its complexity, but we will see it from a viewpoint.
We descend to approach the very edge of the waterfall with great caution since the rocks are wet by splashing water and there is a real danger of falling. We begin the return through a metal mailbox.
The descent by the other path is shorter but more inclined and therefore faster, meandering through the birch forest that from time to time let us see the proximity of the waterfall in the thicket.
The small viewpoint has some wooden benches and an almost open front where we can see the fall of the waterfall. Using the zoom we can see its long tail of horse and as soon the torrent follows its course.
The descent slows down when crossing the bed of a stream where we see some cattle farms, and soon we close the circle of the route and we make the section until the parking, concluding the excursion.
We return to the cabins to relax a bit and eat at the tables outside, in the sun of this beautiful day. The mountain guide has prepared an excellent pasta with vegetables, we drink coffee and prepare for the afternoon excursion.
