Itinerary description

Doing a bit of route finding/cross country, trying to link the trail around the west end of the Valentine Lake. A good day out with the dog. We were at least partially successful, we crossed Stracener Branch about where I expected to, we just couldn't break through the blackberry thicket to get through to the south. I'll try again from that side, it will go. If the map looks pretty messy in spots, it's 'cause it was. Stay tuned.

Foggy on the lake. The old nature trail still exists. I picked it up below here.

Most of the trail was pretty open. Some heavy stuff down,

Stracener Branch

The uplands were fairly clear, it was really tough to get down to the branch. I had to pretty much beat my way through the briars, and it leads me to ... A bridge? 18" log, 20 ft or so across to a shaky "other" bank. I thought better and we went on up-stream a bit.

upstream sucked, literally couldn't drive a dog through it. Back to the bridge. Did I mention he was the best trail dog ever?

There was way more water in the Branch than I expected. This is why. Ruger is inspecting a beaver dam. Lots of activity in here. Forest Service and others, LEAVE THEM ALONE. They are doing exactly what they are supposed to do.

The loop off to the north is just me and the dog taking the scenic route out. It wasn't. We picked up the trail and headed back in.
