Sunshine Tour Circuito Hípico del Sol > Vejer de la Frontera >
Los Canos de Meca >

Marismas de Barbate (Nature Park)(only accessible when it hasn’t rained for a long time, otherwise the paths are flooded)
50.059 steps
BEFORE embarking on this hike, please take a moment to view “HANDY TO TAKE WITH YOU…” at the bottom, to ensure that you're adequately prepared for the trek.
The trail from Sunshine Tour offers a captivating journey with a breathtaking reward: a close-up view of the stunning coastal cliffs near Barbate and an ending in the beautiful Nature Park
After mixing and matching 4 different routes from other hikers, I managed to chart this new course to the sea.
This hike was completed in February 2023. IF YOU ENCOUNTER ANY CLOSURES ALONG THIS ROUTE, PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT TO INFORM OTHER HIKERS ;)
TO START THE HIKE, park your car or van near the Sunshine Tour Club Hipico. Follow the navigation, as the route is relatively straightforward.
After scaling the super-steep section leading up to Vejer de La Frontera, you'll reach a square where you can unwind and enjoy a nice cup of Moroccan tea at one of the most popular cafetaria / restaurant JARDIN DEL CALIFA panoramic views (bare in mind when I was here the opening hours are from 12 till 12).
As you leave the town, you'll gradually descend from the highest peak. Stock up on provisions at the Carrefour Market supermarket before setting out. On your way down you will see windmills from the year 1609 and a Paragliding Club
After completing the long tarmac road, you'll arrive at a forest. Keep in mind that GPS and cellular reception may be poor in this area. However, the stunning reward awaiting you at the coast is more than worth the effort!
Once you've enjoyed the forest, walking through Los Canos de Meca, you will enter the forest again (find a nice forest path here as close to the cliffs there is no path on many parts.
Take a break at the TORRE DEL TAJO, where you'll find benches to sit on and tables to have lunch
As you continue your journey, you'll reach the a parking space close to Barbate. Cross the road to the other side into the forest, once you go through the forest you will arrive on the outskirts of Barbate
Upon arriving in Barbate, be sure to get more provisions in Aldi, Lidl or Dia supermarkets. Once you’ve got your provisions, you can sit at a banch at footpath in front of Aldi gate
When you're ready to continue, follow the route according to GPS into the nature park. Even though there’s a sign to not enter, many people walk, run and cycle here. By the time you’re in this nature park, you’ll enjoy the beautiful sunset
HANDY TO TAKE WITH YOU ON THIS HIKE IN FEBRUARY 2023;
• check what time the sunsets and calculate whether you could make it as this can be in total a 9 hour walk with breaks
• send live location to a friend or family member for them to see where you are
• send to your friend, partner, family member the trek that you’re going to walk
• small backpack for outdoor activities that can fit water, food, your clothes when it gets too warm
• camelback and 2L of water
• plenty of good food for 9 hours outdoors
• short sport socks (and extra socks in case they get wet)
• running or trail shoes
• tight hiking pants that keep warm up to 15 degrees Celsius
• cotton t-shirt
• thermal long sleeved shirt
• sweater
• outdoor sport jacket long sleeved
• outdoor wind proof and water proof jacket (when it’s around 20 degrees Celsius, because at some parts it’s very windy)
• sport neck scarf (this is fantastic for this walk in February)
• sport warm hat (handy when it’s windy)
• sport cap (handy when it’s warmer at some parts and sunny) a hat that doesn’t fly off your head easily
• sunglasses (super handy in Barbate where the sand blows everywhere)
• fully charged phone
• power bank fully charged, 10.000 Mah, fast charging with output of 22.5W, usbc and usb outlets, extra cables in case a cable breaks (power bank gives you the option opportunity to make more steps (because you don’t have to sit in cafes or restaurant to charge your phone), make more pictures and videos
• fast charger in case power bank breaks
• mobile phone with good reception (Movistar has best reception throughout Spain) if you have prepaid, make sure it’s topped up
• BARE IN MIND, when you walk through the forest in most parts you won’t have cellular connection or WiFi, but you will have GPS (depending on how good your phone is)
• BE CAREFUL WALKING CLOSE TO THE EDGE OF THE CLIFFS
