Waypoints
Walking in line with old city wall
Wall originated with Bronze Age, Moors built on it, the Christians made it bigger. Muslims made the bricks out of sand but after that they placed stones. This is a reconstruction from the 50s
Cobijadas
The way woman dressed before the civil war. Everything under was white. Muslim influence. In the summer now there is a competition, the cobijada mejor. They take it down on the stage and it represents the freedom of woman.
Battle of Trafalgar/Nelson
Segment from book. English, French, Spanish injured brought here.
Closed door
Faces south, most prone to attack from Vikings/pirates/Moors etc. We are now in the Jewish quarter.
Lime
Used on the walls, also used in the water to keep clean. Big fishes in the big algivas to keep clean. Salt was used to keep fish/meat. ‘Salary/sal’ comes from that.
Earthquake
1755 Lisbon earthquake, church was damaged, so arches were built. Cadiz bay/Conil/Huelva, all affected by tsunami.
Inglesia De Salvador
Red line is from the old Moorish tower, built 8/9th century. The church we can see was built by the Christians. The aljibe below for the water was built by the moors. They always build that first for the water. The big iron/mental staples are after the earthquake to hold it together. The David Star is a sign showing where the Jewish quarter should be.
Virgen de Oliva Patrón of Vejer
Every summer they bring her from a small chapel outside Vejer. Image of Salvador
Sculpture of the axe
The axe represents Roman justice. Gate is from 15th, thicker than Moorish. Juan Relinque
Old stables
Morocco style. Because if similarity, Moorish king took wife from Vejer, to Morocco and built her a city similar. Twin town with the Moroccon town.
Plaza España
Built by same architect who built plaza in Seville. Town Hall on the right.
Mayorazgo tower
Most important, see enemies. Franco drained the lake for agriculture, now it’s rice fields etc. People want to recover it, ecological hot spot.
