Itinerary description
Sunshine Tour Circuito Hípico del Sol > Vejer de la Frontera >
Mirador Torre del Tajo >
Barbate >
Zahara de Los Atunes
BEFORE embarking on this hike, please take a moment to review my packing list below to ensure that you're adequately prepared for the trek.
The trail from Sunshine Tour offers a captivating journey with a breathtaking reward: a close-up view of the stunning coastal cliffs near Barbate.
After facing five dead-end roads, no-trespassing zones, and road closures the day before (refer to my other route in the area), I managed to chart a new course to the sea.
This hike was completed in February 2023. If you encounter any closures along the way, please leave a comment to inform other hikers.
TO START THE HIKE, park your car or van near the Sunshine Tour Club Hipico. Follow the navigation, as the route is relatively straightforward.
After scaling the super-steep section leading up to Vejer de La Frontera, you'll reach a square where you can unwind and enjoy a nice cup of Moroccan tea at one of the most popular cafetaria / restaurant JARDIN DEL CALIFA.
As you leave the town, you'll gradually descend from the highest peak. Stock up on provisions at the Carrefour Market supermarket before setting out. On your way down to the windmill farm, you may encounter cars and horses despite the "private road" sign.
After completing the long road, you'll arrive at a forest near the sea. Keep in mind that GPS and cellular reception may be poor in this area. However, the stunning reward awaiting you at the coast is more than worth the effort!
Once you've enjoyed the view, take a break at the TORRE DEL TAJO, where you'll find benches to sit on.
As you continue your journey, you'll reach the beach. Be aware that the path I took may disappear due to wind and sea conditions. You may need to find your own path down to the beach.
Upon arriving in Barbate, be sure to wrap up warm with a scarf, sunglasses, and a hat if you're hiking during the winter, spring, or autumn. You can also charge your phone at one of the cafes along the coast while enjoying a refreshing drink.
When you're ready to continue, follow the route and cross the bridge. There is a path to follow on the other side of the bridge. If you don't see the path, zoom in on the map and follow my navigation along the road to reach your final destination.
WHAT I DID/ HAD / TOOK WITH ME ON THIS HIKE IN FEBRUARY 2023;
• check what time the sunsets and calculate whether you could make it as this can be in total a 9 hour walk with breaks
• send live location to a friend or family member for them to see where you are
• backpack for outdoor activities
• camelback and 2L of water
• chicken whole baguette sandwich
• 2 cans of sardines for protein
• plenty of snacks for 9 hours hike in total
• short sport socks
• Nike running shoes
• tight hiking pants that keep you warm up to 15 degrees Celsius
• cotton t-shirt
• thermal long sleeved shirt
• sweater that protects your neck against wind
• outdoor sport jacket long sleeved
• outdoor wind proof and water proof jacket (when it’s around 20 degrees Celsius, because at some parts it’s very windy)
• sport neck scarf (this is fantastic for this walk in February)
• sport warm hat (handy when it’s windy)
• sport cap (handy when it’s warmer at some parts and sunny) a hat that doesn’t fly off your head easily
• sunglasses (super handy in Barbate where the sand blows everywhere)
• fully charged phone (power bank fully charged) (you can charge it in restaurants or cafes along the way)
