Itinerary description

This is a circular walk, of medium difficulty of around 9kms. The route starts and ends by a building known as ‘The customs house’, and is located on the outskirts of Maria.
Throughout the walk there are information panels which give details about resources and various plants and trees.
One interesting place is the site of the ruins of an old furnace, which was used to transform the limestone from the mountain into ‘quick lime’. The furnace was fired by using the wood in the area, which has the necessary high calorific value to maintain the furnace at a constant 1000 degrees centigrade. The fire was maintained by a team of workers who had to keep it burning for three days and three nights in order to produce the quick lime.
In the olden days, quick lime was very important to the villages of Spain. It was used in construction (as a type of cement), it was used to produce the old fashioned ‘white wash’ which not only whitened the houses, but also acted as a disinfectant because of its antibacterial qualities, and it was also used in various medicines.
From the rest area at the top there are magnificent views of El Gabar and La Sagra.
I highly recommend this route.
