Itinerary description
12 km – 1000 m ascent
Rating: 5 out of 5
A hike to the highest peak of Madeira, Pico Ruivo (1862 m) along the PR1 trail. The trail starts at the Pico do Arieiro (1817 m). An air defence radar station is located on the top of Pico do Arieiro.
There’s quite a big parking at the start, which was almost empty when we arrived in the morning and completely full when we came back in the afternoon. I would recommend to start no later than 08.00 in the morning with this hike, so you’ll have the trail almost completely for yourself.
The eastern part of the PR1 is closed! However, the western part takes you via some tunnels and some steep stairs to the top.
We started early (around 08.15) and except from a few people at the start of the trail we were almost alone until we reached the top, which was crowded with people. These people came from a different starting point, Achada to Teixera which is considerably closer to the peak with less ascent. So don’t expect to be alone at the peak when you do this hike, even though you started early!
On our way back, we met many groups of people who did this walk with an organized tour, still walking the trail in the other direction to the top. We were really happy we started early and had such good picture opportunities!
I had to clean up the GPX file a bit because the GPS sometimes was not accurate due to the tunnels and between the steep rock formations.

Stunning views with steep drops, not for the faint of heart. Technically there is no climbing involved, but being fit is a big advantage, but not a necessity as long as you plan to have plenty of time.

Nice trail from one summit to the other.
It can be very crowdy so better start early.
Be prepare it's full of stairs.
I got about 12km, 1000m D+ with my garmin. It tooks us 4h30 for go and return trip.
I would recommend doing this trail while in Madeira.
