Este recorrido circular por la Vereda de la Estrella, de cierta dureza por su longitud y desnivel acumulado, permite sacar el mejor partido de toda esta espectacular zona de Sierra Nevada pues, mientras disfrutamos de unas fabulosas vistas frontales de toda la cordal de los tresmiles a la ida, podemos deleitarnos con el apacible paseo que representa la Vereda de la Estrella, a la vuelta, acompañando las rugientes aguas del río Genil.

Dejamos el vehículo en el aparcamiento que hay en las inmediaciones del restaurante Barranco San Juan. Justo al otro lado del carril, se encuentra el inicio del sendero que tomaremos, que remonta la empinada ladera de manera muy vertical y continuada. Alcanzada una determinada cota, comienza a recorrer los denominados Tajos del Portachón. Las vistas son fascinantes: estamos situados frente al barranco de San Juan, con el río Genil abajo en el valle y, al fondo, las majestuosas nortes del Mulhacén y la Alcazaba.
Caminamos manteniendo la cota, más o menos, con pequeñas subidas y bajadas, y prestando atención al sendero, que, a veces, se entrecruza con otras trazas que hacen que nos despistemos. Al llegar al barranco de Vadillo, debemos descender hasta el mismo para remontar por la otra vertiente hasta alcanzar la Cuesta de los Presidiarios, que viene de la Vereda de la Estrella. Esta empinada cuesta debe su nombre a que, al parecer, era el lugar por el que conducía a los presos. La cuesta continúa hacia Vacares, pero nosotros nos desviamos hacia el refugio de la Cucaracha, que se encuentra en bastante buen estado para pasar la noche. En las inmediaciones, algunos miradores naturales son un excelente lugar para hacer un pequeño descanso y reponer fuerzas.
Cerca de la Cucaracha, se encuentra otro refugio de menores dimensiones, el del Aceral. Entre medias, enfrente, se escucha el estruendoso barranco del río Guarnón, que nace en los corrales del Veleta. A partir del Aceral, el sendero se estrecha y se hace más aéreo, buscando cruzar el barranco homónimo. Tras el mismo, toca remontar un poco para volver a bajar ya de manera definitiva buscando la cabecera de la Vereda de la Estrella, entre el río Valdecasillas, que viene de la laguna de la Mosca de la Alcazaba y el río Valdeinfierno, que nace en la Laguna Larga.
Nos tomamos un merecido descanso junto a las apacibles pozas del Valdeinfierno en las cercanías de Cueva Secreta.
La vuelta la efectuamos por el cómodo trazado de la Vereda de la Estrella, que se va ensanchando a medida que nos acercamos a su inicio. La Vereda debe su nombre a las minas de la Estrella, que eran ya conocidas desde tiempos romanos y de las que todavía quedan numerosos restos. También hay en las zonas otras explotaciones mineras antiguas. La Vereda va siguiendo el serpenteante curso del río Genil, que se encañona formando estrechos cahorros. El río Genil es el afluente más importante del río Guadalquivir, a cuya cuenca pertenece. Viene sus aguas en el mismo a la altura de Palma del Río, en Córdoba
Poco antes de concluir nuestro periplo, rendimos cumplido homenaje al Abuelo, un espléndido ejemplar de Castaño que lleva contemplando nuestras andanzas desde hace siglos.

Vereda de la Estrella in circular route (with English version)

This circular tour through the Vereda de la Estrella, of a certain hardness due to its length and accumulated elevation, allows you to get the best out of all this spectacular area of Sierra Nevada because, while we enjoy fabulous frontal views of the entire ridge from the three thousand to the way, we can delight in the peaceful walk that represents the Vereda de la Estrella, on the way back, accompanying the roaring waters of the Genil River.

We left the vehicle in the parking lot in the vicinity of the Barranco San Juan restaurant. Just on the other side of the lane, is the beginning of the path we will take, which goes up the steep slope in a very vertical and continuous way. Once a certain height has been reached, he begins to travel the so-called Tagos del Portachón. The views are fascinating: we are located in front of the San Juan ravine, with the Genil River down in the valley and, in the background, the majestic norths of the Mulhacén and the Alcazaba.

We walk maintaining the height, more or less, with small ups and downs, and paying attention to the path, which, sometimes, intersects with other tracks that make us get distracted. When we reach the Casillas ravine, we must descend to it to go up the other slope until we reach the Cuesta de los Presidiarios, which comes from the Vereda de la Estrella. This steep slope owes its name to the fact that, apparently, it was the place through which it led the prisoners. The slope continues towards Vacares, but we detour to the Cucaracha refuge, which is in quite good condition to spend the night. In the vicinity, some natural viewpoints are an excellent place to take a little break and regain strength.

Near the Cockroach, there is another smaller shelter, that of the Aceral. In between, opposite, you can hear the thunderous ravine of the Guarnón River, which is born in the corrals of the Veleta. From the Aceral, the path narrows and becomes more aerial, seeking to cross the homonymous ravine. After it, it's time to go up a little to go back down and down definitively looking for the head of the Vereda de la Estrella, between the Valdecasillas river, which comes from the Laguna de la Mosca de la Alcazaba and the Valdeinfierno river, which rises in the Laguna Larga.

We took a well-deserved rest next to the peaceful pools of Valdeinfierno in the vicinity of Cueva Secreta.

The return is made by the comfortable layout of the Vereda de la Estrella, which is widening as we get closer to its beginning. La Vereda owes its name to the mines of the Star, which were already known since Roman times and of which there are still numerous remains. There are also other old mining farms in the areas.

Shortly before concluding our journey, we paid tribute to Grandfather, a splendid specimen of Chestnut that has been contemplating our wanderings for centuries.
