Itinerary description
La Vereda de la Estrella is the most spectacular path for senderistas in the Sierra Nevada National Park. Its route to the middle of the slope through the Genil valley was carried out to transport copper and silver ore from the Estrella and La Probadora mines. For this reason, it is a wide and comfortable path for much of the route, a privilege to enjoy, especially in spring and autumn, the landscape and vegetation of the most rugged area of the sierra. The start begins with a short but steep ascent towards the interior of the Genil river valley, the course of which we will have all the way to our left. The path then levels out & passes through leafy shade, with a great variety of deciduous trees (ash, chestnut, oak, maples ...) that contrasts with the aridity of the sunny opposite, Lorna de Maitena or of the Rooms. Along the path, which goes around numerous ravines, there are different paths leading to other interesting places in the mountains, but they are more demanding than the one we are in. The whole trail in its entirety is of great beauty, some points of interest along the route are; the centenary chestnut tree (known as the ‘el abuelo’) approx half an hour from the start. The impressive view of the north Sierra with its imposing peaks of the Alcazaba and the Mulhacén suddenly emerging after a bend in the path, past the Vadillo area. The river Guarnón that descends thunderously from the Veleta or El Real place, where the Valecasillas and Valdeinfierno rivers meet, in the bowels of the mountains, shortly before reaching the Cueva Secreta.
