Itinerary description
I post here our answer to a private question to us, asking general details of our trip:
Hello, I tell you a bit of the whole story, we went from Napoles to Ottaviano with the Circumvesuviana train. From Ottaviano we walked all the way up the crater. During the whole trip there was nobody else, we were alone in the mountain. At the top, when we were arriving to the crater there are the guards of the park. The guards are placed there to sell the entry tickets to the tourists that go to the crater by bus. Unfortunately, we also had to pay to enter, despite that we had arrived there by our own means.. that is.. walking. The ticket coasts approximately 8€, as far as we remember. On the other side of the crater there are the restaurants and another bus stop that goes down to Pompey. In fact, the buses come from Pompey to the crater and to the crater back. THE ONLY place where you can buy bus ticket is down in Pompey, you cannot buy bus ticket directly in the bus. Because people buy the 2 way ticket when they are down. And nobody is expected to arrive to the crater walking :-P We were able to go down to Pompey by bus because we told our story to the bus driver and he was very king with us and let us go down without paying! We were so lucky with that! That was our experience in 2012, I have no idea if the things are still the same. I guess yes. The total ascending time was approx. 5h, walking at a nice speed but also without rushing :-) All the best for you in your trip! :-)
