Itinerary description
This is the twenty first stage of the Via Appia by foot, from town of Brezza to the town of Le Vagnole at the sea side.
Stage 20 <<-- Stage 21 - Brezza to Le Vagnole -->> Stage 22
In general, the track follows the Via Appia Antica loosely as it's usually not possible to hike the original route anymore. In large part because the old road has been upgraded over the centuries and is now a highway in some section or a main provincial road where cars are speeding by you. In other sections, the road is simply gone. Instead, I've searched for nice roads, a little away from any main roads where there is a lot less traffic (or none at all), while trying to stay true to the original road where possible.
Unlike the previous few stages, this stage of the walk is a long farmland with none to very few shops along the way. It's therefore important to take enough with you to eat and drink and the first good opportunity to buy any water or food will be after 20 km walking. So you may want to (go back to) Brezza to restock before setting off for the day.
The track starts at the stealth camping site and for the first 4 km, follows the SP1 in North-Western direction. From there, you leave the asphalted road for a while and follow smaller road through the fields.
At 6 km, you cross a bridge over a canal, pass by a farm and continue along agricultural roads. At 8.8 km, you'll cross the SP6 and just continue on farm roads.
At almost 13 km, you'll come close to a train station and you can use the indicated way point to make a detour to the station. There is a small bar at the station, but not sure when/if it will be open when you are walking this stage.
Even if you don't go to the train station, you'll come to the track and follow it for half a kilometre before you get to bridge where you can safely cross the tracks.
After that, it's a lot more farmland for the next 7 km until you'll get to the town of Mandragone. The track passes by a square with a small supermarket, a small shop and a cafe. Hopefully at least one of them will be open at the time you pass by.
The last 5 km of the trail takes you out of Mandragone and through more farmland as you'll eventually end up in the coast town of Le Vagnole where you'll see the sea again since leaving Brindisi.
The track ends near 2 hotels:
