Le Puy - Saint Palais - Hendaye/Irun (and not St Jean Pied de Port).
The Via Podiensis waymarking is a GR-waymarking, i.e. a lot of detours to avoid asfalt, the admire the landscape and to visit castles etc.
Since I am meither a masochist nor a purist but a pilgrim, I dropped a lot of these unnecessary detours.
