Itinerary description
We had a long layover at the Hong Kong airport and decided to use the time to explore an area of the city. The hike starts a short distance from a local bus stop and then climbs to one of the highest points on the island. The path we took stayed fairly close to the Peak Tram line that could be used to take you to the top. There are great views in many compass directions as you circle the peak and head back down towards your start point. There is a series of escalators that can be used for the descent but you must have the timing right as they only go one way (the direction changes at around 10 a.m.).
Public transit was reliable, clean and inexpensive. We had no problems getting back to the airport in time for our flight. The hike was strenuous on a hot day with loads of elevation change and plenty of water consumed. There were several public washrooms and lots of places to buy food and beverage along the way. Well worth doing and we were very happy to see some of the city and surrounding area.
