The Fan Si Pan (Phan Xi Pang) with 3142 meters, is the highest mountain in the former Indochina region (present-day Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand). It is located in the province of Lao Cai in northwest Vietnam, in the Hoang Lien Son mountain range.
It is known as "the ceiling of Indochina", being recognized as one of the very few ecotourism places in Vietnam, with about 2,024 varieties of flora and 327 species of fauna, as we could verify during the whole ascent.
Day 1
We arrived in Sapa on a night bus that we took in Hanoi, they are very comfortable and cheap. As we arrived in Sapa we took a private transport that dropped us off at the Tram Ton pass, from where we started the route, at the same gate as the Parque Estanción (Ranger Station).
The route takes us in a southerly direction, away from the border with China, in a gentle ascent, accompanied by the murmur of the multiple streams that cross our path, the songs of birds and the sound of insects and vermin. that lurk in the shadows.
At about 2000 meters the temperature is pleasant, we climb at a good pace, but reserving strength, the high degree of humidity will gradually undermine your strength (as we could see on the second day), and no matter how much you drink the degree of dehydration is very high.
Soon we reached a spirited group of Vietnamese, clerks from Saigon, whose company financed the trip for the participants' rejoicing. After the photos of rigor we continue the way together, in animated chat, while the guides of both groups exchange opinions on the day, it is chewed that it is going to rain, which would complicate the arrival to the field 2.
After arriving at the second resting place we decided to leave our local friends and continue climbing at our pace, the vegetation covers everything, we enjoyed the sight of the oxen grazing peacefully, and the brightly colored vipers that decant in the branches, over our heads .
We arrived at camp 1, where we tasted a great meal prepared by the guides together with H'Mong people, who shepherd this area.
We take the road again and finally, to the south, we have the first views of our goal, the 3242 meters that await us behind the clouds, allowing us to see only at times. We also see the North, behind us, the great views of the Silver waterfall, which is impressive despite the distance that separates us.
When we have traveled 6 kilometers we find a complicated section of ascent, in which we have a short and narrow passage that gives way to a completely smooth vertical wall, of only 8 or 10 meters, but that we must save by means of some wooden pegs quite loose and a scale held by fixed ropes, whose anchors are of poor reliability.
After overcoming this obstacle we are aware that we are surrounded by clouds, and the humidity is very high, the light plays and the water vapor envelops us in a ghostly environment.
Finally it breaks to rain when we are entering field 2, at 2800 meters altitude, a few hours later our Vietnamese friends. We all dined together, laughing and singing, well into the night.
