Ascending Vihren 2914m. Pirin National Park, Bulgaria.

The distance covered was 19 km. The elevation gain was 1304 m. and the total time was 9 hours.
Vihren Peak is the tallest mountain in Pirin National Park and the second tallest mountain in all of Bulgaria. Only Musala is taller. Vihren peak is 2914m and Musala peak is 2925m. The hike up to Vihren Peak is probably the most popular and challenging hike in the Pirin National Park. But the hike to Vihren Peak is one of those that locals check off the list of must do in Bulgaria. Vihren Hut is at an altitude of 1920m. Then to Vihren Peak is another 1000m elevation so it is very steep. (Www.redwhiteadventures.com).
While we walk we come across an information desk. "In the most beautiful and visited part of Pirin mountain, between the localities of "Predela" and "Todorova poljana", is located the oldest national park in Bulgaria. Pirin National park is covering an area of about 40 365 ha. In 1983, Pirin National Park has been inscribed on the World Heritage List of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Inscription on this List confirms the exceptional universal value of this natural site which deserves protection for the benefit of all humanity.
Exceptional biological diversity and high percentage of endemic species characterize the territory of Pirin National Park. More than 1300 vascular plants, from which 17 are local endemic species, about 3000 species of invertebrates, 166 species of birds and 50 species of mammals could be observed here.
The Pirin's relief is distinguishable for its alpine character, represented by significant segmentation, steep slopes, high ridges and deep river valleys. There are more than 80 peaks higher than 2500 m, with the highest - Vihren peak, rising up at 2914 m. More than 180 glacial lakes occupy the bottoms and the terraced slopes of the deep cirques, located in the granite part of Pirin. Just before reaching Banderitsa hut we meet the Baickushev pine tree one of the oldest pine trees in the world.
(With EOS Thessaloniki hiking club).

Ascent to Vihren peak 2914 m.

The distance traveled was 19 km. The elevation gain was 1304 m. and the total time was 9 hours.
After about 9 km of driving from Bansko we reach a location at the base of the lifts where we have to stop. Starting this year, the Bulgarian authorities prohibit - and quite rightly - the arrival of cars and coaches at the Vihren shelter in 1972 as well as at the Banderitsa stand. There are small buses that ply this route for a small fee. The leaders choose to walk to the Vihren shelter from where we will start the ascent. Crowds of climbers and trekkers throng the shelter. Among them a lone climber of the EOS Ioannina.
The course is strongly uphill and we gain a lot of height very quickly. Short stops are necessary to regroup the team. Fortunately the weather was favorable during the climb. The view from the Vihrenski preslap pass at 2600 m is breathtaking. We see the Vlachinski Lakes on the left. The final climb to the summit cone is full of "ribbons" and intensely tiring. At the top we find an iron construction full of stones which serves to raise the altitude of the top by a few meters. On one side of the peak we see the Koutelo peak and on the other side the Todorka peak.
During the descent, we follow a different route towards Lake Muratovo (Muratovo Ezero, 2250 m). As there is no markings but cuckoos it takes a bit of searching on the difficult downhill after the saddle. An EOS mountaineer dares to dive into the icy waters of the lake but we quickly find out after the fact that swimming is forbidden.
Vihren is the third highest peak in the Balkans after Mount Mousala and Mount Olympus. From an elegant sign we are informed that "in the most beautiful and visited part of the Pirin mountain, between the sites "Predela" and "Todorova Poljana", is the oldest national park in Bulgaria. The Pirin National Park covers an area of about 40365 hectares. The National Park Pirin has been inscribed on the World Heritage List of the Convention on the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. The inscription on this list confirms the outstanding universal value of this natural site that deserves protection for the benefit of all humanity. More than 1300 plants, of which 17 are local endemic species, about 3000 species of invertebrates, 166 species of birds and 50 species of mammals can be observed here."
The leaders of EOS Thessaloniki helped effectively in the successful ascent of a large number of climbers to the top as well as in the smooth running of the program.
