Itinerary description
Great breakfast from 7.30am. Left at 8.15am.
TRACK
Leave hotel to your right and arrows will come up soon (10-20m). There is a split way after the promenade walk, where you can take either the litoral (left) or coastal (straight) but both meet again a few hundred meters later, so if nice weather take the litoral.Continue following the arrows and after a while cross to the right and go under tunnel to go inland.Pass by veggie garden and a few coffee shops and supermarket. From roundabout onwards there are no amenities until arriving to the outskirts of Caminha. However it´s not that long as we arrived just before 10am on a normal pace.
In the 13th century, Caminha was just a fishing village until King Afonso III decided to build a modern castle and a fortified village following the bastide model, finished in 1260. At that time, the region was of great military importance, since it was located at the border with Galicia. The castle was later reinforced by Kings Dinis I, when reclaimed land finally connected the original island to the shore, and Ferdinand I. Although most of the walls and towers were torn down or built over, the oval shape of the castle is still clearly visible in the design of some streets, and the keep tower is still intact and serves as entrance to the historical centre.
Ferry boat (around 20m) operates depending on weather and tide. Tickets booth is near coffee shop and usually openas 15-30m before boat leaves. Plenty of space for people but limited for cars.
DO NOT OFFER WATER TAXI AS NOT SAFE. At the most people can take normal taxi ride.
Once in A Guarda, forward the clocks 1 hour. Follow the Camino (arrows to your left) which is a bit up hill. When you get to the main road, cross to the other side, go left 20m or so and then follow the Camino directions to inland. This will take you near to the hotel, passing by the restaurant Pizzicata and Bodega Bar. It´s a smooth flat walk.
Beware that in the part that is bush terrain, there is a turn to the left near a stone washing tank.
Hotel Vila da Guarda with simple but ok rooms.
