My smartphone didn't record well the distance, we walked for around 9/10km.
The shortest past to the waterfall is difficult to go up and it would be probably too difficult if you want to go down without good boots and sticks. The return passing close to Boyana lake is very easy.
We did it at the end of April, the ground was very slippery and close to the waterfall there was snow. Some of us went there with normal shoes but in my opinion we risked too much. I would say that trekking boots are necessary or at least trekking shoes, because the path is mainly irregular and there are some places where you should cross water on stones/wood.

Did this very enjoyable hike on Saturday the 4th of May. Would recommend to do the loop this way around. The climb was not easy but very enjoyable. It was already rather busy, but the weather was also lovely. The route would probably to busy for me during high season.
Easy to follow the trail, well marked.
