Sophia painting and and VN Barquinha history

Here in Barquinha we can discover public art along the paths of the Artejo project. Not too far from our school (D. Maria II) there is a wall with a painting called Sophia. The name Artejo is the combination of the word art and Tejo, the river that passes by our town. Artejo is an artistic project within the community, promoted in partnership with Fundação EDP and the Municipality of Vila Nova da Barquinha and is part of a national program oriented to low-density territories, as an instrument of social inclusion. There are 11 places with art throughout the council of vila nova da Barquinha. Vhils, Manuel João Vieira, Violant and Carlos Vicente were the authors of the 11 public art including Sophia. Violant, the author of Sophia explains that he wanted represent wisdom and the name came from ancient Greek Sophistes, since this street art is close to do the school. Nothing better to represent Wisdom as a woman worrier, that looks you straight in the eyes with confidence and strength. This Goddess is surrounded by grey skies with dark clouds and protected by a roll of papyrus paper that represents the fragility of knowledge. In the paper we can read poems of two of our greatest writer of all time Fernando Pessoa and José Saramago.

In Barquinha there was a camp that played an important role in the preparation of Portuguese troops during the First World War, which took place between 1914-1918. The end of the First World War is celebrated on November 11th. This conflict killed thousands of soldiers between 1914 and 1918 and some of them from Barquinha. They are remembered by the Monument Of The Unknown Soldier. Here are the remains of António Gonçalves Curado, the first portuguese soldier killed by enemy troops in Flanders. Windmill

A windmill is a mechanism that uses wind energy to move other equipment, such as a grain grinder, a water pump or even to produce electricity. In the windmill in Tancos, wind energy was used to grind cereals, reducing them to flour. With this flour they used to make bread.

Almourol Castle

The Almourol Castle was part of the Tajo line of defense at the reconquest time. At the 13th century the fort was already there and was called Al-moloran. Sir Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, conquered the castle and gave it to the Templar Order. Lord Gualdim Pais made deep improvements, concluded in 1171. The main purpose of the Templars was to protect the Christian pilgrims to Jerusalém. Their Knights were poor and few but notorious as the terror of muslims. In 1312 Clement, the pope, dissolved the Order. In Portugal, all their possessions were transmitted to the (new) Christ Order. The castle lost its importance and got changed.
