Itinerary description
Wakan Village to Jebel Akhdar summit hike W25.
(Online information)
Located 2,000 meters above sea level and in the Western Hajar Mountains is Wakan village, a small mountain village with beautiful terraced gardens overlooking the surrounding mountains above and Wadi Mistal below. It is about 150 kms from Muscat.
I counted 657 steps that are laid from the parking lot till the Watch tower at the end of the village. This passage winds through active farms with Pomegranate, Oranges, Olives, Dates and Apricots planation of Wakan village and a nicely laid Falaj feeds the farms. The water originates from within the mountain of Jebel Akhdar.
The perfect time to visit Wakan village is from mid-May to the end of August, during this period all the plants in the area bear fruit and although it is unadvisable for visitors to pick the fruits of the trees, many locals sometimes offer the fresh produce to those visiting the area.
Wakan is quite popular for treks and hikers and you will notice hiking tracks that start at the village and they are marked by the familiar yellow, green and red flag that mark most hiking tracks in Oman.
The track that goes through the village is the easiest and most accessible, compromising 700 steps across the terraced gardens and along a falaj stream ending at the watch tower at the top of the village. The walk takes less than 30 minutes in one direction with several observation points and rest stops.
There is also a trail (trail number W24a/W25) that connects Wakan village to Al Jabal Al Akhdar in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate as well as the village of Hadash that is hike that will take several hours.
The Wakan-Hadash mountain path is lovely and picturesque path that takes you from one mountain village to another, both located at approximately 1,500 m elevation. The hike is relatively well-marked with the ‘green, yellow & white‘ flag markers, and takes you up one of the mountains at the foothills of Jabal Akhder. – adjacent to Sayq Plateau at approximately 2,300 m elevation.
The highlight of the hike is at the plateau, where you can take a slight detour off the trail-head to the edge of the mountain for a full panoramic view of the surrounding mountains from the highest point in the hike – the plateau also offers a few spots that look great for camping. Apparently, it is also possible to get to Jabal Akhder from there via an unmarked path.
I started from Wakan village up the well marked W25 all the way to the top to reach Jebel Akhdar and reached the trail summit at 2350 meters.
I could continue to Hadash village by W24A and continue towards Wakan by another trail, but I decided to come back as I was alone.
Hadash to Wakan drive using local cars can cost you $100.
As a group the whole loop can be hiked with similar fitness.
When I hiked, it was early December and cloudy. Had a heavenly hike with clouds around.
The terrain is friendly and nice. You gain elevation quite quick.
The views from the top are impressive, from the summit you can see Sayq plateau and the Akhdar town too, although they are at a distance.

Hi,
Your username is complicated.
If you are an experienced hiker, may be you can do full trail of Wakan to Wakan via Hadash.
Or you could do Wakan to Hadash.
I didn't because I was all alone.
Hello. Did you do the full Hadash to Wukan loop clockwise? I am trying to find a reliable trail to follow. Thanks!
Hi Jenster,
No, As I was alone that day and it was full cloudy at the top, I decided to return from the highest point.
There are quite a few trails on wikiloc for that segment, as far as I know the whole trail is well marked with the standard flag signs.
Good hike for the cooler times though.
Enjoy your hikes !!
