Itinerary description
Today, we embark on a short tour (12 km in total) in the far west of Asturias. We start in the tiny village of Pesoz, where we park our car close to the municipality building. The route is slightly ascending but very doable if you have a basic condition. There's some nice view over the Asturian hills and mountains, but the best part is when we enter the abandoned village of A Paiceiga.
A Paicega offers breathtaking views over the Salime reservoir. This village was constructed in the late 1940s to accommodate more than 2000 workers and their families building the reservoir dam. Once the largest dam in Spain, it created the Salime Reservoir and is used to generate hydroelectric power.
Nowadays, the village, including the church, the worker barracks, and the cableway to transport material up and down, is totally abandoned, giving the village a tranquil atmosphere. It's strange to stroll in between the decayed houses and enjoy the views from the viewpoint, and to realize that not even so long ago, this village was full of life...
