Itinerary description
Wallsend - Bowness-on-Solway following the Hadrians wall path. First part of the walk is into and then out the west side of Newcastle. Following the river along, mainly along field tracks you are then adjacent to a road for another 20 (yes 20) miles which does spoil this part of the walk considerably. Eventually heading into the hills the walk starts to become pretty amazing. You start to actually see stretches of the wall and several features that make the first 28 miles a distant memory. The next 50 ish miles are generally excellent with some stunning highlights. The end 10 miles consist of a 5 mile very straight road walk between the marshes and then the final part into Bowness which is pretty good. All in all a memorable trip done over 4 days with four out of the five overnight stays excellent. (Stop 4 was disappointing). If you are going to do this walk definitely go east to west to get the road following out of the way first. Also worth knowing is that the recorded elevation on this walk is inaccurate as it is almost 7500 feet in total!
